"New Generation " Rainbow Just Arrived

The last reall good corwinder...

was on the Electrolux models, pre 1205. Lux used to make their own cord winders. Spring loaded, tough. The newer winders use a mylar ribbon and a plastic wheel that reminds me of a reel for movie film. I saw them on the newer Luxes. I'd rather have a longer cord than a cord winder.

New Generation Rainbow arrived

Steven,
I am with you on this one. To each their own. I just started the thread so everyone could see what improvments and changes had been done on an old American vacuum cleaner that's been in business since 1936. I always enjoyed the threads about the new Dyson's that Jack would take the time to post. I learned a new appreciation for the Dyson from Jack.
I sure hope someone has a thread when the new Kirby come out.
The Rainbow is not for everyone but someone must have liked them or they would not still be in business after 75 years. I do think this is a very effort on their part to be customer focused as I see many, many worthwile updates from my 18 year Rainbow which still works perfectly fine.
I also ALWAYS liked the cord winder on my Electrolux Epic 8000. It worked smooth and the cord is long too. The machine is like the Rainbow a little on the heavy side for some users. I always thought it was a beautiful design.
The cord on my Electrolux 2100 is too short and the cord winder has a tendency to not want to hold.
I particularly like the cord set up on the new Rainbow but it may not be good for all users.

<span style="background-color: #ffff00;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Sir, your comments and language innuendos are way off base and down right rude.  While you are certainly entitled to voice your opinion and views, they can be expressed without using language that can be objectionable to the younger readers and some senior for that matter.  </span></span>

<span style="background-color: #ffff00;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Please be a gentleman and express your points without the objectionable remarks that are completely inappropriate in my opinion and other as well.  Honestly by your own admission </span>"</span><span style="background-color: #ffff00;">Have never seen one live, that is why I feel so jaw-dropping" <span style="background-color: #ffffff;">how can you formulate an opinion and moreover make an assessment on something you have no real knowledge in. If you have never seen or operated a Rainbow you certainly can not formulate an assessment regarding the machines' physics now can you?

<span style="background-color: #ffff00;"><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Rob - Great Machine you found something that works very well for you and I am happy that you could make this purchase and also share so much information.  Perhaps, you need to consider being a dealer, sounds like a few purchases are heading Ken's way.

Floor-A-Matic

I highly doubt it. I'm not 100 percent...But I think anything pre E series would not be compatible.....Unless there is some kind of hose adapter I'm not aware of.

All this Rainbow talk.....I got mine out last night and cleaned floor to ceiling for 5 hours. I was exhausted when I finished....While using it I'm listening to it and remembering the comments of how sound of the machine was too loud and either I'm crazy or mine just isn't that loud

The more I think about it.....I don't think I'm going to upgrade anything....At least for the time being....as much as I would like to.......My Rainbow actually still has that new smell from when I took it out of the box........It's crazy. It still has that new Rainbow smell.......How that's possible....I dunno.

New Generation rainbow has arrived

Doug,
Thanks for your comments. We as vacuum collectors like them all and everyone has their personel favorites. I just thought this new Rainbow had enought major changes to take some pictures.

Eric,
I have a Rainbow SE too. Ken would be the guy to ask but I don't think it would work as my SE has pigtail plug-ins. I think (not sure) the E series can be updated by buying the new electric hose, wands and power nozzle.
You have a good machine in the SE. Mine could always pull grit and sand other machines that had a lot more suction and stiff brushes left behind.
Just check out ebay and see what used Rainbows are bringing. I was very surprised.

Can you post a picture of Separator? I wondering if they changed the design. by the way my name is Joel, I'm new in here.

I don't want the cordwinder on the Rainbow either-the manual wind cord is fine.for cordwinder vacuums-the longest cord has got to be on my Sebo D4 Premium. Its 40'.Ithink the new Rainbow PN has a flat belt. The maunal tells you how to replace it-and like Oreck a spare belt is inside the PN cover. The separator on my new Rainbow is the same as the one on my other E2-somehow these are self cleaning-a brush is underneath the powerdome just in case.So far the separator on both of my E2's is fine.

Hey Joel..........

Yea. Make sure if you do upgrade that you also upgrade the floor brush. It's not the same. It snap locks in whereas the one I have has the bump on the end up the curved wand. From that picture above, that floor brush is totally different from my E2...........Also take note of the new Aquamate 3 in the picture above........Since you already have the Aquamate 3 for your e2 2 speed........Since this new aquamate is direct connect.........I don't even know if your current aquamate 3 will work with the new hose.......You could always keep your old hose I guess......

The E2 separators are self-cleaning?????????? Really? It seems I read that once but I can't remember the source. I still clean mine on occasion.

I read that too about the separator-in E and E2 models you didn't have to clean it after each use.My older E2-been used several times-the separator is still clean.Nothing caught in it.In older Rainbows-peices of hair, carpet fibers, etc could get caught in the separator. The new one in the E type units seems to not have that problem. The book with my new E2B just says " remove and clean the separator frequently"The few uses I have on the machine its separator looks still like new.Suppose pet owners and folks with long hair may have to clean theirs more often. It might have been the operators manual for one of my older "E"s that had that statement. In older Rainbows I bought used-or from trade in piles-ran their separators thru the dishwasher.-top shelf in the washer.

liking and not liking are two diffrent things / being down t

Doug, I had expected some answer such as yours.
Rob, no harm done to you, just keep them coming those pictures. As I stated above: All looks quite intriguing and interesting to me. While I could put up with some cord clips (notwithstanding that this is a major drawback), I couldn't ever put up with that screaming sound of a reluctance-motor.

Doug, it was more than clear to me that "swear words" are not welcome here. That is why I took a second breath thinking how I could "minimize" the tragedy of what I was about to say to a minimum and I was thinking a regular biological term might me more than appropriate ("cattle droppings" instead of the so much feared BS word).

Yet it remains a fact that what I have seen and what some regular thinking led me to (and others) will still hold true:
A concentrically mounted cable winder would NOT interfere with the construction of a Rainbow, let alone its balance, just look at those old Hoover Celebreties, this is the way it could be done).

Come on, it doesn't need a rocket scientist to understand that there is a dolly, a water basin (second layer), a fan motor with a separator (third layer) and a dome (outer housing with a motor on top of the blower) to make up for a Rainbow. (Talking about physics not having seen one) = talking about physics: who was I really "insulting"? You? All of our physicists? The Rainbow fans? Nope. Just the fact that I am still shocked of how Rainbow tries to get away with such excuses of why not having installed a cable winder (still lame to me).
So talking about physics (of language, that is) = no intention to insult anyone, let alone our posters, the only one I was referring to was the Rainbow Corp., still clinging to my first post: Rainbow excuses are plain B...S.... to me. (Guess the wording, I've done my share of avoiding this wording.)

Fact is: I am more than shocked, they didn't cover this topic in their remake of the E2 (It's 2011, right?)
True is: Some affictionadoes can go along with this, I can too (gritting my teeth, if I have to)
But I can certainly go with the design and the new features, but NOT with a grinding motor noise.
Can you get my point without transferring all my "shockedness" to yourself or to our readers?
I DO mean the Rainbow Corp., not anyone here.

New Generation Rainbow arrived

Not sure what "grinding noise" you are talking about. Mine sounds great. It has a very pleasing sound and it's running as I write this in the air cleaning mode.
Fewer parts to wear and no carbon dust. This one has the advanced Hurricane brush less motor.

Mark,
Thanks for sending me the info on the window squeegee attachment. That will work great just to snap on the upohlstery tool when needed. I can wash my sliding door when I use the Rainbow in the breakfast room. Love that wet pick up feature.
I used it on my car seats today. It was shameful what it sucked out of the seats and the car smelled so fresh afterwards as I added a little Rainbow deodorizer to the water.
You should see what it pulls into the water bath when in the clean air mode overnight. I got the spare basin just to use for the air cleaning mode.
The led lights in the basin look cool at night too.

What model has a

grinding motor noise ? I have yet to find one in all the Rainbow vacuums I own . I have a D2 series D4 series , D4se , E series one speed and the Two Speed E2 Rainbow and all a very quiet . Maybe Wirlpolf`s Rainbow`s have bad bearings which would be caused by storing it wet and not taking the time to clean and dry it after use.

Rob, this has been a wonderful learning thread!!  Thanks so much for starting it.  I must say that it has really increased my interest and desire to have a new Rainbow.  I was talking with a friend about this and we both have the same question.  Since there is only one hose and one set of wands now how can you go from wet cleaning to dry without dust and dirt sticking to the inside of the hose and wands?  I'm sure it isn't a problem but would love to hear more about this.

Window Squeegee attachment???  Please tell us more about that too!!!!

Thanks in advance

Yes, grinding motor noise

hello all,

yes, a grinding motor noise (and NO, it is not caused by not having the separator cleaned). Started by this thread I took the effort to get hold of a Rainbow, a D-series model that is. It does NOT have this sound.
It sounds just like any regular vacuum (it has a normal 800 W carbon brush motor). And it cleans like any regular tank-type vacuum. Thanks Diana for letting me use it for a bit ;-) Nice thing! Carbon brush motor type, how nice.

Yet I've seen some on youtube (E series) that were declared to be reluctance motor ones. THERE! The nerve-wrecking sound when ramping up. This strange grumbling howl, this shrill yet grinding noise,a strange magnetic hum going upwards, kind of a dentist's drill dubbed with some transformer hum, I cannot really explain. Yet when on full speed it is (almost) ok, but somewhat strange roaring remains to be heard.

It must have to do with the new electronic motors, the reluctance type. I have found the same sound on Vorwerk VK 140, on their latest kitchen blender TM 31, on the Black & Decker "el cheapo" wannabe cyclone vac D2000 and on the later E2 series Rainbow vac.
It drives me nuts, I cannot even figure out why it does. Each time the info says "reluctance" motor. Goodness, if I could just get the same units featuring a regular brush-type motor...
I fear that more and more vacs are going to be reluctance motor type, so that will be it for me with collecting vacs, this strange and very disturbing sound drives me nuts.

Why can't something of the new direct-drive washer motors be adopted, just some coils and just some solid-state electronics to control the speed? (Ok, I can hear the tough ones again: "this is just the same" - no it is not, the reluctance motors (apart from having a lower electrical efficiancy compared to standard motors) they have this strange growl to them, the frequency controlled washer motors just don't).

Anyway: A good vac sounds low-hummed, air-rushing and strong to me, but not loud or shrill or strange.

Maybe it has something to do with

you being in Germany and the Rainbow running on 220 volts , here in the USA we have 120 volts and our Rainbow`s dont make the grinding noise that drives you nuts . You also just might be ultra sensitive to certain noises that don`t bother the average person . Well if you do decide to stop collecting vacuums good luck on your next adventure . Let us know if you get your hearing checked to see if you really are super sensitive to certain noises .

Squeegee

No problem Rob

This was the sqeegee I found on Goodvac.com........ it just slides onto the upholstery tool...........It's cheap too.........I'm not sure if it's meant for doing windows......But I don't see why it wouldn't work on windows. I might get one for mine. I'm not sure if it's a genuine Rexair part or not
