New Find Electrolux Excellio 5045

I Love the look of these machines, I had one up until about a year ago when somehow it vanished when I moved my shop.

These are very rare in SA they were on sale here for only two years and were very expensive at the time. The problem was it competed with the AEG Vampyre at the time which Elecrolux SA distributed. Customers just preferred the Built in Germany brand.

Good find! See previous thread showing mine off. It was only taken out of its blue Electrolux cardboard packing box to show here on this site and had very little use beforehand. I do love the quiet noise and the auto switch for cord rewind is a superb idea. Wish SEBO would put one like that on their K series.

For the enormous size of the machine, the dust bag was miniscule. I never saw why a consumer would want such a big cleaner for no useful purpose.

I'd agree with that - but then at the time the Miele S500 series and counterparts had 4 litre dust capacities against Hoover who had lots of new and old cylinder vacs. I think the whole point of the Excellio was to offer something like a Miele vacuum with its remote control handle, boost settings etc and slight hike in quality. The Mondo E and the Excellio are both very durable, generally.

I had a beautiful red sample one with a euro PN, I can't find that one either.

This is what happens when you have to many vacuums, you loose track of them. Today I went down to one of my storerooms and found two beautiful hoses for a Hoover 375 I knew I had one somewhere but had no idea I had two. I also found some beautiful hoses for 70's Electrolux cylinder models.Pics tomorrow

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva;">And yes, the bags are pretty small but the machine cleans like there's no tomorrow!  It's so quiet as well, and I love the remote control too.  Here's something funny about this machine: because the remote works in basically the same way as a TV remote does, I've programmed a learning remote control originally designed for TV use to serve as a backup remote for this cleaner in case the one on the hose ever goes bad!  In my opinion, they're one of the finest cylinder cleaners Electrolux ever came out with.  So, congratulations on your find, Gareth!</span>

So when were these on sale exactly then?

In the UK they were sold in the latter part of the 1990's. The main problem with sales over here was that (A) Electrolux were selling so very many other cylinder cleaners at that time, so there was a good deal (too much really) choice for the consumer, and (B) it's retail price was so high it was competing with the likes of Meile and Dyson.

Between 1996 to 1999 I think. The Ingenio was first, then followed by the Excellio - have a look taken from Chris/Turbo500's catalogue scans from 1996, Argos. (Link given below). It does say "5.6"" litre dust capacity but that was for the Ingenio and not the Excellio.

Sebo fan, you may recall that the Igenio was the model which replaced the Harmony cleaners. They were practically identical but for colour and tools supplied (there was a lot of plastic tubing going on with the Harmony models). The Excellio was larger and was also sold as the "Airclean" top-rang high-filter model.

Such a shame how Electrolux have turned out though, they only sell the Workzone at Argos now last time I looked.

Also from what I can recall, when I bought my budget Mondo E, you could find bags for that series everywhere, but the higher S-Class bags for the Excellio used to be harder to find. The Internet has saved this model effectively where bags and filters are concerned, now.

Even their early to mid 2000's Bagged The Boss range were better than what they are now. I have a Z2270 which my late Nan owned, found the receipt & it cost £45.99 BNIB from Argos in 2005!

Benny - being a 1990s Hoover cylinder fan, I wasn't really that clued up with Electrolux, let alone giving it a chance for consideration. But! The Mondo E 1300 was the model that changed my mind. A super budget and basic cylinder that was super quiet and powerful. I didn't know that the Ingenio replaced the Harmony, so that's good to know.

Didn't Electrolux also do a range of uprights called Airclean too? I recall using a black one that was quite heavy but very powerful.

Personally Hi-Lo, Electrolux's biggest mistake is trying to pass off existing floorcare ranges with the other brands they own. In the U.S there are some great vacuums but in the UK we get the poorly constructed "moulded plastic" vacuums whilst the better built ones are sold under the AEG branding.

Yes, Airclean were based on the Contour Design at first, then followed & were produced in the same design as the Bag/Bagless 'Powersystem'. Saw a Powersystem/Ariclean at a car boot with the Bagless Cassette.

Yes, Airclean was also used as a name for the high-filter Contour cleaner. Whether Electrolux knew it or not I have no idea, but few people would be willing to spend that amount of money on anything but the new Dysons. The older Airstream models seemed to sell in greater numbers, but then it had a lot less competition. It also had a poor motor which did not like running at 1000watts, nor did it like the extra thick bags and filters. Motor failure in these machines was rife.

In reply to what you mentioned sebo-fan, Electrolux have never given Zanussi a chance to actually produce a vacuum of their own, just shoving Electrolux's poorly built, easily clogging range under the Zanussi name. Wilko are massive sellers of it.

Well Hi-Lo they haven't given AEG a chance to design vacuums either - don't forget they carry the name proper in other countries.

Not all models clog though so please don't tar every sub brand that Electrolux sell/rename. Zanussi have two bagged cylinder vacuums plus the Powerlite based bagged upright. Also for a fair bit a few years ago, John Lewis had a "HiLight" bagged upright under their own name from Electrolux.
