New Canister Needed

Hey Everyone...... I'm in need of a new canister vac. My new house is mostly hardwood floors with some area rugs and my 3 year old Kenmore Progressive upright just isn't cutting it here. My budget is in the $300-$350ish range. I would LOVE to have a Miele again (lost it in a divorce), and I've bid on several on E-bay but the bidding got out of hand. I've contacted a couple of club members who I know own vac shops to see about a used one but no one has responded.

So what are your opinions about a new Electrolux Oxygen? A Kenmore Progressive canister? I also am watching an Electrolux Renaissance on Ebay but I'm afraid its to heavy. Any other opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest looking at Riccar

They have some very nice vacsm good suction, bags arent' too expensive. They have some nice cans in your price range too.

It's funny you say the Electrolux Oxygen. I actually most-likely will be getting one of those in about a month or so. A lady I clean for has one and the powerhead is just about shot. The suction is good but she wants to junk it as she is looking into getting a Riccar upright. Whatever you buy, don't buy the Oxygen if you want a long-lasting vac or another Kenmore(my cousin only had her's for 3 years and it fell apart). If you want a quality machine, go for the Riccar(or Simplicity). Just remember, you don't need the TOL one as it sounds the powerhead would be used lightly and the main motors on Riccars last 4EVER!!! Another lady I know had a small Riccar canister for 10 years and she even took it on cleaning job. My aunt had a Riccar canister and it lasted 15 years!!! Just from the stories around here and my own personal experience, I don't doubt about anything from Riccar or Simplicity.

Why does it have to be new when there are so many fantastic vintage vacs available that we all collect.. New would be the last thing on my mind.
 
Have you thought of a filter queen. They hold alot of dirt. Easy to use and you can get a good deal on ebay. Go for one that has a newer style power nozzle if you can or my favs are the triple crown(red Dirt container) or the 70th aniversarry (green dirt container). Either way filter queens are awesome machines.
 
I would suggest looking at an older electrolux canister such as a Super J, silverado, or Olympia. Even though I don't like canisters very well I am rather fond of my Super J.
I also like the Kenmore canisters either the new ones or an older used one.
If you don't need A power nozzle a new constellation would also be great.
 
A used Electrolux canister as Sam mentioned above would be fine. Even a used plastic lux canister would do well too. Just buy the hepa/filtrete bags for them.

Stay away from the reni, too many electrical problems with this model
 
I Agree With Fred!

I think the new Connie would be hard to beat, and the price is right. They're powerful, durable (metal construction!) and quiet, except when you're using the turbo nozzle. I don't think you'll find a better cleaner for the price--unless you choose a vintage machine!

Thanks for all your opinions everyone. I'm not sure why I want new, Just seemed the best solution. I will look into the Riccar, as well as keeping an eye out for a used Miele. I have nothing against older, I had an Electrolux Golden years ago, it was just so heavy. What are the model names of the plastic bodied Electrolux? I got rid of my Kirby when I moved because of its heft. Both of us have back problems and I don't want to be stuck with a vac thats a chore to use.
 
Hey Tim! I've got a Filter Queen Anniversary Edition for sale that's just like new, with the original boxes, manual, etc. I recently got a 360 FQ and don't need both. I'm asking $375.00, and will e-mail you pics if you're interested. BTW, it's not heavy and has the good ball-type casters, so it's easy to pull around. It also has a hose that's about 8ft long, so you won't have to move it quite as much. Just a thought. Later, Trg
 
here is another idea.....

I just picked-up a nice Electrolux canister model, made in about the 1986 time-frame, for $10 off of Craigslist last week. Its in real nice condition although there is tape on the metal wand that goes to the rug sweeper and I'm sure it to secure the wires that run the sweeper motor. Everything else on it is perfect. It would be great for wood floors.

I'd suggest that you watch CL and also go to your Goodwill and Council of the Blind stores, or others like these, as I am getting a vac there every 2 or 3 weeks it seems and pay from $1.50 to $10 and have gotten some great vacs. Most of the time they only need a good cleaning up and new bags and filters, although I had to put a belt on one I gave my daughter the other day ($1.30 for the belt). You save money this way so you can get 2!!!

I have a totally complete and unabused Miele White Pearl that I could let go. It was the TOL machine when bought in 1996. The power nozzle cover shows some wear from use, but the other attachments and the machine are very nice. Email me if interested, [email protected],
