Hello all.
I need to know what would be a good bagged upright for berber carpet. This is for my Mother's home, she currently has a dyson that I bought her but due to illness finds it difficult to operate/clean and now simply just wants a bagged upright.
She has pets so it must be durable with great suction.
Doesn't have to be new, I'm open to a used model via ebay.
Was thinking about a kenmore direct-drive progressive.
Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Sebo...

Automatic x1. She will never have to mess with the hight adjustment. She will never have to worry about belts.( if a sock would get caught in the brushbar, it will shut completely off. if the vac needs a new bag, it will shut off and if it is clogged it will shut off. It will run you about $450-600 depending about the deler. Go to my link and find a deler in your area. I have a Automatic x4 myself and they are great machines and are made in GERMANY !

Kenmore Progressive with Direct Drive agitator bagged upright.
Hoover WindTunnel self propelled bagged upright.
Sanitaire S647 bagged upright with 7.0 amp motor and VGII.
Sanitaire S634 bagged upright with 5.0 amp motor and Disturbulator.

Sebo Felix

The Sebo Felix has been talked about several times on this Forum. I recently purchased one for myself for Christmas and absolutely love the machine. It's lightweight, very easy to manuver (it has a swivel head and turns very easily), has great suction and cleans my berber carpet better than just about any of my other machines. The bags are decent size and easy to replace. You can pop out the hose and hit the baseboards easily or use it to vacuum the furniture. It's a quiet machine but very powerful. I have two long-haired dogs and vacuum daily and the Felix makes easy work of it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I think the Sebo is beyond my budget, even used. Personally, I like the sanitaires but I think she would like the added convenience of on-board tools.
So that leaves me with the Kenmore Progressive and the Hoover WindTunnel.
KirbyUltG: What do you think about the Hoover U5018-900?
It seems to have excellent reviews on epinions.
Thanks again!

I would strongly recommend

Going for the Sebo. It is a mcuh better vacuum than the Kenmore or Hoover, and also has on board tools. The Sebo is also lighter than both of the others which are VERY HEAVY. They are also not nearly as well built as the Sebo. The Felix model is also in the price range the Dyson is in.

But they are sticking to a budget, Reggie ;] maybe a (dare I say) 2nd hand Sebo, in that case?

The Sanitaires mentioned in an earlier post will clean the best. The 634 has a smaller motor, and is designed for weight. I sell a lot of them to people who think they want an Oreck. The 647 (as well as 670 and 677) have the big motor, the same as the commercial machines, and clean even better. They are not that much heavier than the 634. If she can handle the slightly greater weight, go for the 677, if not, the 634 is ideal. I sell these in my store.
I have seen the Sebo Felix, though don't at this time sell them. Much about it impressed me, but light weight was not one of those features. I thought it was quite heavy, at least as heavy as most full sized uprights.
Another excellent choice, if she needs attachments on board (the aforementioned Sanitaires do not have attachments) is the Sanitaire 782. At 13 lbs. it is lightweight, powerful, has onboard attachments, a cogged belt, and an interlock which prevents the lid from closing if there is no bag in place. This is my biggest selling upright. It is also a 2 motor design so you can turn off the brush roll for bare floors or when using attachments. It has a 2 yr. warranty, 5yr. on the motor. I sell them for $229.95.

Eureka True Hepa bagged upright. Consistently given excellent reviews in Consumer Reports, as well as a "Best Buy" rating. I've seen it discounted to $100 from the usual $149, but even $149 is a reasonable price.

The commercial version is very similar to the true HEPA Sanitaire version, and I love my commercial Eureka true hepa bagged vac. It's made me a convert back to bagged vacuums, after using various bagless for 10 or more years. I love not having to empty the dust container after every room, and the thing does not loose suction as alleged by bagless proponents.
The commercial version is generally available for $200; I got mine on special at a Costco business center for $150.

Sanitaire

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but, Im not very familiar with all the Sanitaire models.

Do these machines have a beater bar?
What is the difference between each of the VibraGroomer brush rollers?

Bagged Upright

Get a rebuilt Kirby Heritage model with latest Micron Magic bag. Also see if this model is able to be retro-fitted with
the smaller rug nozzle. None cleans better!

Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions.

I ended up getting her a (2nd hand) Kenmore Direct-Drive Progressive, purple one.
It has a more aggressive brushroll and the suction seems very strong. Wants to eat everything in it's path, might need to adjust the height setting.
It came with a U-3 bag, not the same bag Kenmore recommends but it seems to be fine.

Thanks again, she seemed very pleased.
