I just won a Kirby Dual Sanitronic 50 on ebay. It's in excellent shape. My problem is that the seller shipped the D50 with the cloth bag detached from the emptor. It appears to be an after market bag with a zippered pocket in the back.

I have tried for a couple of hours to re-attach the bag to the emptor. I am unable to stretch the elastic cord around the base of the bag to fit over the emptor. Perhaps I am not strong enough, or is there a special tool for this?

Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Please help.

Thank you

what

Hi Stan, hold the emptor in place with your feet or legs or something while sitting, and do your best to stretch the bag over the lip.it's best to start at one end and work the bag on, tucking and stretching as you go. There is no special tool, use both hands and it should be easy!

While it's off the emptor, go ahead and hand-wash the bag in some dish soap, or at the very least vacuum it out!

Ok Alex,

I will wash the bag and then try again to re-attach the bag to the emptor.

Thanks,

-Stan

Hi Ben,

I have searched online for an original type bag for my D50 but cannot find one. Do you know where I can get one? Everything else on the D50 seems to be original.

I grew up with a Kirby D50 in the house as a kid. Would love to get it as close as possible to the original.

Were there different size bag openings at the bottom of the bag? Was thinking the seller might have shipped the wrong bag with the D50.

Let us know how it goes! Those bag springs can be a challenge. Getting the emtor stationary is the key. I think it helps to position it so that you're the bag DOWN when stretching it over the opening.

I finally got the bag on...

and was all excited to turn it on and test drive it, but when I did I discovered a lot of air leaking out right near the top of the emptor. There is a small tear in the bag just above the top of the emptor. RATS!!!

Now I will need to get a new bag on ebay. I have two choices - either an all black bag or a green bag with Kirby logos on it (for D80). I was wondering which one would look better with the tan trim on the D50. What do you guys think?

Glad you got the bag on!!! With older bags, the fabric can be weak. You may have torn it while putting it on. HOWEVER, you might try sewing the tear. That way, you can use it until you get a new bag.

Ben...

Thank you for that part number, but I have checked at least a dozen online parts stores and all I can find are Black bag guards for the D50.

I was wondering if there are any collectors that may have a spare D50 tan bag guard they are willing to sell.

I've had a couple of bags with holes at the emtor, after I've washed the bag I just put an iron on patch over the hole from the inside so it doesn't show.

Check local vacuum cleaner stores and Kirby stores for trade-ins or new old stock (NOS). I was just at a vacuum store the other day, and the owner showed me an ivory with teal trim Electrolux PN-1 with its original plastic wand that had just been traded in--that's from the early to mid-'60s (same era as your Kirby DS50). If you don't find success right away leave your contact information with them, and just be patient. There are some stores, like the one I referenced above, that are chock-full of old parts from by-gone eras. You may even stumble on to one of them. You will also discover stores that don't keep anything vintage in stock; so you can check them off your list. Part of the fun is the hunt!

New bag for my D50

I just received my new D50 bag in the mail yesterday.

I put it on, minus the bag guard which I am still looking for.

So $52.00 for theD50 on ebay plus $22.00 for the bag is $74.00 total. This price includes attachment box with most of the attachments and complete Rug Renovator. Not too bad of an investment for my favorite vintage vacuum.

I'll eventually polish it up some more and get a new set of wheels and a new Amodel polymer fan. This vac had a factory rebuild in 1989 so it has a Lexan fan which is a little dinged up but still fully serviceable for now. The motor runs and sounds excellent.

So here are a few pics of my D50 powered off then powered on.
