You are sure making some good headway with the sanding and polishing - good job! Very time consuming but will be worth it in the end. Nothing like the bright shine of a Kirby!
If this will be a daily driver, I would suggest replacing the bearings while it is apart, since they are cheap (~$7 each) and the fact that the machine was quite neglected. Definitely replace them if the races are loose. The front one would be the priority since it gets the heaviest load (this one does not require a puller tool.)
