pulled the cord out and heard an unusual grinding noise from the cord winder Plugged the machine in and dead. It was working just fine a couple of days ago. Today no power, not even the little plug light on top glowed. Its just dead. And when I tried to retract the cord it wouldn't retract. I've never had a problem with one of my Lux cord winders before.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Cord winder

I have no idea why there's no power. As for the cord winder, if it won't retract, then the spring is sprung This needs professional repair. The spring is a strong steel coil, and razor sharp. Do not attempt to work with it, you could be baddly cut! The only thing I can think of is that the cord has been severed inside the winder.

Get it to a repair shop.

2100 cordwinder

On earlier models(came to US from Canada in 85 and steadily improved) the reel can crack around the metal contact rings and separate. You would need a good donor CW or complete assemblies are available. The above can not be repeated enough-Use CAUTION around any cordwinder spring!!!--Service hint-the 2100 is to be taken apart upside down(wheels up)after side strips removed.

If you were getting a grinding sound chances are either the contacts have bent / broken, or the rings on the take up reel have broken loose. As you mention that the cord isnt rewinding I would suspect the latter. The cord breaking at the reel is also quite common. Either one is an easy fix. And dont be intimidated by the spring - it isnt a problem if you treat it with a bit of respect. I'm thinking that a broken piece of the reel may have jammed the spring too - not allowing it to retract.

The reel itself is about a $15 part but you can buy a complete cord reel assembly if you dont feel up to the repairs.

I have taken them apart rite side before many times, It is better upside down though I agree..!

Circuit board & Cord winder chard.

Not only was the cord winder chard & warped, so was the wiring & circuit board under the top cover plate. I never smelled any thing such as over heated wires or melting plastic or unusual sounds from the motor. It appears it had some electrical shorting goin on causing a meltdown.

I'm sorry to say this not so old Lux is beyond my fixing ability.

Thank you so much for all your replies.

2100

Charring/shorting--This much damage is unusual. Most of the few problems with 2100 are CW or minor switch trouble. At least as with all of us it's not your only vac!--Upside/Rightside--Elux service centers had a 'cradle'molded to the shape of top side to rest in on bench. But either can work depending on problem area.
