My latest aqcuisition - Hoover Ranger

I dont like the location of the switch on that Guardsman, I mean, the bag would get in the way, and its quite high up to raise you foot as well. I prefer handle switches, but even the newest hoover turbopowers seem to still retain the foot switch, but the UK TP1, TP2 and TP3 had the switch on the bag housing.

I agree totally about the Guardsman.

One could easily 'kick the bag'. Our apartments, (Junior over there) has the switch in the exact same spot as yours.
The new plastic Elites were made with the slide switch half way down the cleaner. It was cheaper to do that. It was NOT progress. All the new HOOVERS have the swithch back on top, but, in the front. Oh, well, you can't have everything. Where would you put it?
Hope the photos helped.

On that Gaurdsman - I would have the switch on the hood, in the same place as our Rangers had the switch, in front of the handle release pedal.
I cant understand why manufacturers place the on off switch in different locations on the same model for UK or US use, I can only assume that its traditional for American cleaners to have the switch, like a lightswitch, on the rear of the handle. In the UK market - anything goes lol Our older type Juniors here have the switch on the base, on the left side of the raised part of the hood, with the more modern ones having a combined handle release/on switch built into the same pedal!

I didnt think it would end up an epic post lol. I wanted that model because it was the cleaner that was used in our house when I was aged between 5 and leaving home at 18. That particular model is in my fathers loft now, and they use a Hoover Turbopower 4, but my mother liked the Ranger, and I used to like it as well, hence getting my own Ranger, having not pushed one around for over 22 years. Its amazing how endearing a vacuum cleaner can be so that one yearns for it all these years later, and I fully expect to keep my Ranger till I die, as I see it as part of my heritage. It was one of the last "True" Hoovers before the advent of the 80's and the plastivacs, and the product of decades of Hoover evolution. Its very sad to see what happened to Hoover UK over the last 20 years, and I dont think they will ever regain the crown they once had of building the greatest vacuum cleaners in the world, so popular that the verb hoovering was named after them.
Its great to see that the Ranger in it many forms around the world has so many fans, and I hope that long may that continue.
Here's to the Hoover Senior Ranger!

I remember seeing a magazine article about a television actress or presenter, an older lady - can't remember who it was. Anyway she had a Powerplus in the photo.
