Hi all. I have been given several vacs by a good friend Of mine.
He gave me the hard bagged Goblin housemaid a few months ago but it was missing the bumper. He has since found the correct bumper
The soft bagged Goblin housemaid and the Hotpoint light and easy was made up of several of the same model. It took some time but I think it was worth it:o)
There getting very hard to find.I've fitted NOS burshrolls in all three vacs.
I was also given a Moulinex Master but I've not even started it yet...

Hope you like them.

James:o)

You will see there is an obvious difference in size of the lens panel on the headlights. This was because in the very rare event that the headlight would last more than five minutes it could melt the lens on the older models. I did see this once or twice. So Goblin made a bigger lens on newer models, but as the softbag and hardbag cleaners both came with and without a headlight depending on the model, the blanking panel on the cleaners without a headlight was always the same size as the original headlight lens was as it didn't need to be larger of course as there was no bulb to melt it.

Love the Housemaids, such a 70's looking vacuum. They don't actually perform that badly. One of my holy grail vacuums is the Commander hard bag in red though, want one of those so bad!

James, thanks for posting these pics. My mum had the Hotpoint ( complete with tools ), she bought it in 1968 but only lasted 6 or so years. The height right control broke so the cleaner became a pain to use as you had to tip it forward to make the nozzle contact the floor. Was replaced with an Electrolux 160.

I love the styling of the Goblin Housemaid. My mum's cousin had one but I never got to play with it.

Always wanted to try those two - seen but never used. I seem to remember my auntie having a vacuum looking exactly like the Hotpoint but it said Morphy Richards on the front. Is this my ever failing memory or has anyone else seen one??

Oh my!

Another vacuum fiend in Edinburgh!!!

I am don't know if the Hotpoint was ever sold as Morphy Richards, would be great to see one if it was. I do remember a friend of my grandma's had a the one that was sold as Spinney Light and Easy in the late 70's/ early 80's.

Paulc my mother and I took our redundancies from Morphy Richards in 1970 and prior to this I am almost certain the only cleaners in the UK to carry the MR name were a 1950s upright which looked a good deal like a Hoover 1224, and the others were cylinders. I think even then there were only two; one like a Hoover constellation and another just a standard cylinder. I do know that for the overseas market Morphy Richards did deals with other manufacturers but this was way out of the areas I worked in.

Our redundancies were as a result of on going massive changes made to the company after GEC bought up most of the companies who owned it. Hotpoint was a brand owned by AEI who were involved with Morphy Richards from the middle of the 1960's and they went on to call the whole organisation 'Hotpoint' in the mid 1970's, which is why a good deal of Morphy Richards appliances from this time carry the Hotpoint name on the ratings plate. This of course was long after I had left, but it would not surprise me in the slightest if a Hotpoint light & easy cleaner came to light with the Morphy Richards name on it. I have never seen such a machine, but seeing how you asked the question I am wondering if think you may have?

vintagerepairer

I have never seen a Morphy Richards badged Hotpoint, as I said to Borusa, I have only ever seen them under Hotpoint and Spinney Light and Easy. I do however remember seeing a maroon Hotpoint with ,I think a grey bag, in a catalouge. When I read Borusa's comment about a possible Morphy Richard's/Hotpoint the maroon Hotpoint sprang to mind. I have no idea what catalouge it would have been in or what year, maybe I may be mistaken but it is a very vivid picture I have in my head. Sorry I can't be more specific.

No worries,

I just wish my memory was a bit better!!! I was given my Mum's Hotpoint as a "toy" but my Dad cut the power cord off as my parents were worried I would try and take the cleaner apart whilst plugged in. I don't know if I mentioned this before but the man who ran our local vac shop had a scar on his arm he got when he was two, he had cut through the power cord of his mum's vacuum whilst she was cleaning, the live cord had ran down his arm causing burns. He was very very lucky not to be killed.

I am intrigued by you saying your mother had an Electrolux 160 after 6 years of the 1968 Hotpoint as the 160 would have finished by then and replaced by the 170. Was it bought from new?

The 160

was a recon, sorry I should have made that clear, I seem to remember it arriving assembled in a big plastic bag, Grandma bought herself and my mum one from the local vacuum repair man, no tools though. I used to love going to his shop and seeing the display he had of reconditioned vacuums. Lots of 1224's, most with the norweb/manweb logo, a few seniors, 1334's and a couple of Electrolux 500's along with 160's mostly the white variety but he did have a couple with the chocolate coloured bases.

As the 160 had no tools my mum bought a moulinex hand held cleaner to do the stairs and furniture.

Light and Easy

At some point the Hotpoint became the Parry Light and Easy - light blue with a grey bag I thimk - I presume Hotpoint sold the moulds and production rights to another company after they brought out their all new and completely Swallow range - and there are not many of those around I can tell you! At a later stage it became just Light and Easy with, I think, a butterfly decal on the front cover - i can only recall the light blue/grey combo, but it may well have been in other colours as well.

In fact the L&E beagn life in 1960s with two colour schemes - pink (a la Hoover) and Torquoise although I dont think the base had the darker colour. All these L&E cleaners are quite rare for some reason for they were certainly around for a long time in one form and another and there is not doubt they were light!

Vacbear, those earliest models you refer to must have been the type with the large external connection box on the back of the handle, with a plastic dolly switch in the top. The newest models had a foot switch, I think this was 1970's, and finally this cleaner had two flex hooks fitted to the handle in the late 1980's - early 1990's instead of a pocket on the bag.
