A couple of pictures of the System 20 I passed on to a friend who likes his eighties cleaners!

Hey Fred!

Thats a great looking Hoover you got there! Wink! I loved the you tube video!

Mike, Tommy and Simon! Thanks for posting pix of your Hoover! I LOVE the look of the hoses and the powernozzles! I wish we had that style here in the US. I like the compact look of them!

Mark, I would love to have an audio Hoover but with Majel Barrett's Star Trek computer voice! Can you actually hear the voice while the vacuum is running?

Audio Hoovers

The first time I was at the Hoover Historical Center... in like 1993... they had an Audio Hoover. They somehow had it rigged so it ran for just 10 or 15 seconds, then shut off and said something like "The bag is full" or "Check the belt" It was very cool... and that was the only time I saw it.

I want to say it was from England. I remember it was completely black in color. It may have even been one just like that which Mike posted pictures of above.

Hoover 'Sensotronic'

Caution is advised when using this cleaner; the motor has a tendency to burn out. Bag had to be changed regularly; motor filter was washable.

If I remember correctly, the 'System 2'-onwards have two-stage motors. The stationary baffles between the two rotating fans, is made of thermoplastic. During prolonged use with a clogged bag (even moderately used/half full); the motor gets hot and the aforementioned baffles melt, then scrape against the fans, then get flung through the motor, and finally expelled via the exhaust diffuser.

I should know; it happened to our's. Twice.

Fan/armature assemblies were available at reasonable cost, as opposed to the complete motor.

Bag check indicator was rather useless; it never indicated the bag was full; would not register when cleaner was stood on end (magnet/Reed switch). It only registered a clogged hose or tube.

Wasn't there also the 'System 25, 35, etc'?

Ozhoover: 'Audio 300'
That's the cleaner I saw on BBC tv's "Tomorrow's World" science programme, circa 1987/88. The presenter was using it, then it conked out, played a short tune, then uttered "Hose is clogged, clear the blockage." He then dislodged the bag, closed the lid and "Bag is not correctly fitted" was spoken.

There are apparently 4 spoken phrases; the two aforementioned, plus "Bag is full" and "Have motor checked by qualified service agent" (or words to that effect).

I've been meaning to add these pictures....

...and with our record snow I'm stuck at home with time on my hands.

Here are photos of my two machines, a Hoover S3231 Electronic 1000, and a private label Phase IV. The history on the Phase IV is very sketchy, but here is what I've heard-

A Florida entrepreneur contracted with Hoover in the mid 80's to make these machines under the Phase IV label. His small band of salesmen made door-to-door calls in Florida and sold them somewhere between $700-1000. Unfortunately, a nice machine was being sold by a company with little scruples: they tended to prey on the elderly population and used hard sales tactics. Eventually, this came to the attention of the Florida Attorney General and the company was shut down.

This may or may not have any truth to it, but I do know that they weren't sold very long and are very scarce.

Sorry, the photos are exceeding the allowed download size. Once I figure how to make them smaller, I'll post them.

The "Phase IV" power nozzle...

...is (was) identical to our UK "Turbo 500" power nozzle. It featured the 'activator' agitator; a lighter duty version of the "Conquest", "Turbopower", "Turbomaster" agitator.

The snapped power hose could be replaced by the Mark 2 version, (pistol-grip/petrol-pump style hand-grip).

For what it's worth, I had the successor to the UK 'Sensotronic' range: the Hoover 'Alpina Tria-3'. It was quite good, but the power hose was so unwieldy. The remote wired power control sometimes sent the wrong signal (power rising when supposed to be decreasing, etc.)
