Hi Everyone, new here, this is my first thread. Just thought I’d share with you my first Hoover convertible. Hopefully the first of many. I believe it is a 704 however the model tag is reading 04-01 or 94-01 (see photos). Maybe the 7 broke off? It has the cord reel, which I am thinking might be rare as I don’t see them that often, but I am not an expert. Maybe someone and chime in on how common the reel is or exactly what year it’s from. (Thinking 1968-70). Either way I am pretty excited about it and thought I’d share it with you all. Included a pic with my Dial-A-Matic too.

Looking forward to learning & sharing more

Tom

so youre the one who bought that one for 25 bucks in Connecticut. you have no idea how rare that is. that's the lowest production convertible ever made with 5000 units. i have the two penncrest versions. i find the cordreel cumbersome. people love them from a collectibility standpoint, but in everyday use theyre a pain with that reel.

Wow if your eye (and luck!) is this good right from the start, I can only imagine what the future holds. Enjoy it!

I've been lucky at finding vacuums myself, but only after being at it for 4 years, it is finally kicking in, lol

It has a cordwinder!!

A great, nice rare pair of Hoovers.I have dozens of Convertibles(MOST of which need new homes)& have never had a cordwinder model.CWs were first seen on Singer uprights before & after WWII,then Electrolux about 1948,GE canister about 1959 & much more common in 60s & later.Hoover first used CWs in mid 60s on many Portables,a very rare Slimline & the rare Convertbles. You will see that on the early Singers,Convertibles & many Eureka F-G style uprights when the cord is pulled out it is top of handle as it should be.This is now forgotton with new Chinese uprighe with cord coming out low & being stepped on by users who do not know or care to learn the reason for the cord clip that can often beak.
Did you get attachments to convert the Convertible?

Thanks everyone!

Thanks everyone for the support and information on this model! I had a feeling it might have been rare but I did not know it was to this extent. I am lucky to have it in my small collection. As mentioned The cord reel is a bit cumbersome, I did think about trying to find another handle to put on it so I can use it more easily but now that I know how rare it is I think I’ll just leave well enough alone.

@bnsd60m9200 You are correct this was for sale in Connecticut, however I did not get it for that good of a price. I am impressed you know what’s going on in the northeast seeing you are from Texas. Thanks for sharing, it pretty cool that it is only 1 of 5000

@rugsucker. Thanks for educating me on the cordwinder history, very interesting! I am not sure what converter attachment you are referencing but the cord clip does have a hairline crack and I was going to research to try to find a replacement, however I am sure it will be difficult if it is rare. Is the converter a replacement for the cord clip? Which convertibles are you hoping to find new homes for?

I wonder why Hoover put the upper cord grasper on the front of the handle. Eureka’s Cordaway uprights had the grasper on the side. It was actually a pleasure to use - you just squeezed up the metal retainer plate, and guided the cord into the upper slot. In the 20 years my parents owned their 2083 Rugulator/Cordaway upright, the cord reel never broke. Mom loved it!

Hoovers

Cord clip-Be very gentle.
Converter-This would slide under the Convertible at rear(similar to an earlier Kenmore)to convert to hose & attachments. It also shifts to high motor speed for hose cleaning(similar to Kirbys). The very first converter was a serarate attacment as you could also use hose as blower.Later converters were attached to hose which was now suction only. There were 2 att sets-Deluxe with hose, floor brush, exclusive telescopic wand and dusting, upholstery & crevice atts.-Standard with hose, straight wand, crevice att & brush with short bristles.
Convertibles for new homes-MANY.Metal base with round or square hood, both deluxe & standard-plastic base with small & large hood-some with flat handle. Many colors, most with correct bag. Most at least good, some very good, some for parts or restore. Also MANY Dial-A-Matics,with & without power drive. If interested call(I dislike TXT).
