Hi-Lo - the reason the crevice tool has a hole in it is simply air flow relief - in normal use it prevents the Panasonic from falling over as much. If you source an older Panasonic upright with the brush roll on/off function you'd probably be happier. Though the Panasonic may well make a racket on hard floors, at least it lacks beaters so damage is kept to a minimum.
 
I thought the Panasonic Bar had beaters

But nothing gets up log bits from carpet/hard floors better than it though.
 
Meant to add - a lack of metal beater bars - it may have plastic beaters but I don't think they're as damaging on the Panasonic as they are soft swift like bits designed to do hard floors. Certainly my own Panasonic doesn't have any beaters on its wooden brush roll.
 
I only ever seem to see real cheapo stuff at car-boot sales & a lot of Dysons. I've never seen a Numatic. My dream is to find a mint Numatic David for a fiver (yep I can dream !)
