Momentarily tempted by an Electrolux Discovery II

So I breezed through a nearby Goodwill store this evening and spied what at first looked like a nice Electrolux Discovery II upright sitting in the corner, but it ended up being a pretty forlorn looking specimen. Its gray plastic body had faded to a tobacco stain yellow and it had been subjected to what we call in these here parts a little bit of 'redneck engineering'. The cord hooks were missing and had been replaced with what looked like a blue plastic curtain hook, held in place with nylon cable ties. And the original cord was long gone, having been replaced--rather expertly--with appeared to be an orange drop cord. I'd had it in the back of my head that I wouldn't mind having one of those, and they only wanted $15 for it, but given its condition and the number of vacuums already in my little house, I decided to leave it where it was to let someone else discover.

grabbing machines that are reasonably priced for the parts. Comes in handy.

Discovery II

These were great vacs with 2 motors,gear belt,easy change of 4 ply bag,easy to clean under most furniture,reset and the WORST handle and cord wrap ever.It was a great style and design until it was used in real life cleaning.The salesmen were told shortly after introduction in April 86 to unwrap cord before placing in or out of car to reduce breakage of the fold down hooks.The original handle grip could loosen and wobble.Later it was seen that the notch in the handle for the cord hooks could lead to metal fatigue cracks.All these problems were solved with stronger,better later designs.The opposite of your find is that some otherwise worn Discoverys in thrift store may have had the better(& expensive)handle added.

Yeah, my ex-wife had Discovery II when we first got together. It wasn't a bad machine, definitely better than the POS Kenmore Progressive she insisted I buy about the time we got hitched. I was intrigued with this one for about a minute and a half but then I opened the bag compartment and the cover came off in my hand. I didn't even try to find a plug to test it. Sometimes it's better just to walk away and not look back.
