Does anybody know where I can get motor brushes for an Electrolux Model LX? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Steve

I think you are right. I took one out of the motor and it looks the same. Thanks.

Carbon Brushes

I hope so Andy. I have never done this before.

Do new carbon brushes improve the suction? I removed the back to see the brushes and one of them was not sparking while I had it on. Does that mean it is worn or just broken? How do you know if they are worn?

Then what would cause weak suction? A dirty motor? I am waiting for the new brushes to arrive and I cleaned the motor and fans. A load of dust and dirt was blown out, so I am hoping that the new brushes will improve it.

Dirty Fans, worn brushes

All add up....think of it as a snowball effect. If the fans were stopped up and filthy, it's not going to be running at it's full potential, simply because it can't breathe....you know when you have a cold and you're all stopped up how sluggish and short of breath you are....same concept (well close enough anyway!). Add in the worn brushes, that can cause the motor to slow down as well, now you REALLY have a problem on your hands!

Just out of curiosity, how do you plan to seat those brushes when you get them in? Some folks use the VARIAC method (where you cut the voltage down to 50-55 volts and run it at 1/2 an hour), or if you're REALLY feeling brave, taking a seating stone and stick it to the commutator while the sucker is running (no pun intended!)....just wondering?

I think the best bet for me is cutting the voltage and letting it run, but not sure how I would do that. What would I hook up the wires to? Would you know? Never done this before. Thanks.

Variac

I'm not sure if this is something you would see yourself doing much of, or if you can think of other applications where cutting the voltage down would be necessary. If not, it would be hard to justify the purchase of this item, but here's a VARIAC that would work for your motor. It's 0 to 130 VAC and 20 Amp max, which should MORE than take care of that 535 watt LX motor. Now, you can possibly make one as well, if you're rather savvy with electricity and wiring. You would need a dimmer switch (one that's safe for inductive motors, not the typical resistive dimmers seen in big box stores), an outlet, and a voltmeter. Hopefully this will turn out to be an easier task than you're thinking it will be, and you can get your LX back up and running well. Those are wonderful vacuums, and well worth fixing it back up! Good luck!

Thanks for looking into that Variac, but I used the dimmer switch instead and ran it for 3o minutes at half the voltage. However, it did not improve the suction at full voltage when I installed it back into the machine. The brushes were not sparking too much so I assumed they seated ok.

I looked at the top bearings and they seem ok, loaded with grease. The armature doesn't seem worn and the surface of it seems ok. I turned it with my fingers and seems smooth.

What could be the problem with the low suction?

The back of the machine? I put a new one in and also a clean bag. I have another LX and suction is way more stronger.

Hey Andy,

Do you know how to remove the bottom part of the motor where the fan is? I removed the 4 screws and the bottom just turns but will not come off when I try to pull it down. What is holding it?
