Miele S5 or Aerus Guardian
I agree with Bill. It depends on how it will be used.
Electrolux:
(1)very powerful suction
(2) better hand tools
(3) easier to move about with narrow tank
(4) 20 year waranty
But it is LOUD
Miele:
(1) wonderful bare floor tool
(2) much quieter operation
(3) longer power cord
I really liked the Miele because it was quiet,but I did not like how it moved over the rug edges and much preferred the Lux tools for dusting and the small hand power nozzle.
In my house with carpeting,hardwood floors,tile and stairs to clean the Aerus Lux would work best BUT it is so loud. Almost has too much suction for above the floor use but would be a benefit if you have thick carpeting.
I think both are very good vacuums.More of a personal choice.
I would want to try them both before buying.In the store I was not impressed with the Miele power nozzle but it is hard to tell in a store setting. It may not have been a fair test.
I have been told by several vac club members to only consider the top of line Miele power nozzle.

I have the smaller powerhead, rather like it, quiet,small to get around tight areas, ect. However, if you had larger areas or thick carpet, maybe not.

i prefer the miele because it is lighter weight and much quieter. also, the hose is crushproof which is nice and has very nice ergonomics...its an all around well put together machine. but i would buy the SEB 236 power nozzle and the sub20 dusting brush to get the most out of it

I am a huge Electrolux (Aerus) fan, always have been, but if I were buying a new vacuum tomorrow in that price range the Miele Capricorn with the SEB 236 power nozzle wins hands down! I had a Red Velvet and Blue Moon along with an Epic 6500 and the SEB 236 cleans rings around the Electrolux PN. The Lux PN isnt bad but it doesnt have the same weight to it or height adjustment like the Miele does. The Lux tank type is the easiest to manuever but thats not important enough for me to not choose the Miele. You can really pack the bag of the Miele until they are like a brick and it still cleans well, plus its a totally sealed system. As for the warranty, I never had an issue with my Mieles nor have I had a problem with any Electrolux that I have ever owned. So for me, again I would choose the Miele for its overall greater cleaning ability. I have yet to use the Guardian Ultra but those plastic wands and that handle (I've had the 6500 & Renaissance) can be very heavy and cumbersome for any above the floor cleaning. I am anxious to try the new Lux to see just how much more power it has than the previous model. I wish that Aerus would modify the power nozzle a little bit so that it seals itself to the carpet better, more like how the SEB 236 does.

You brought a very good point I forgot about the Lux. Those big fat plastic wands! I have them on my Epic 8000. They are not very user friendly.
One thing that I don't like with either machine is the cost of maintaining the machine AFTER you have already paid a high purchase price.
From what I can figure the cost would be the following:
Miele
(1) hepa filter $52.95
(2) charcole filter $36.95
(3) bags $19.45 (I think that would be for 6 bags)
Total = $109.35
I read where the filters should last 50 hours
Aerus Lux
(1) hepa filter $43.99
(2) bags $21.99 (12 bags)
Total = $65.98
That is a lot of money to spend EVERY year to SAVE dirt and filth in the closet. Plus you have to drive to the store to buy the bags and filters or pay shipping on the net.
I have heard from several club members that the Miele does keep the suction with a full bag. My Rainbow costs me nothing to maintain except about 30 seconds to dump and rinse the basin. No bags to buy,no odor "ever" and always no loss of air flow. I had to get over the fact that after you have used your Rainbow for a while you don't have to take the separator off every time. I only do it maybe once every several months and my motor is very clean after 18 years. It is my understanding that the newer Rainbows have a hepa filter but it is washable. I do not use ANY of my expensive machines to pick up flour,plaster dust ever.
I think if I were to buy either of these machines I would buy the Miele just because of the quiet motor and wand set up and the adjustable power nozzle although I much prefer the Lux canister design.

Have any of you ever gone to a Miele dealer for the demo where they drop the machine or pick up the machine with the cord,yank the cord winder and step and twist and try and kink the the hose? It was very impressive. I don't think I could have done that with my Anniversary Hoover canister "Miele look alike machine" or my Hoover Connie which arrived with a kinked hose and that sad turbine nozzle. Of course there is BIG difference in the price.
It really does not apply to us collectors because we take care of our machines anyway,but it was a very impressive demo to see performed in the store.
Of course unless Aerus has changed their quality a Lux will take a lot of abuse too and then there is that suction at the hose end with the new motor.

I grew up with Electroluxes and always preferred a canister to a upright. When my original Silverado kicked the bucket a few years ago I went to a Miele retailer who did a demo for me. I was really impressed but did not have the money to spend on the machine. I decided to fix up the old Kirby Heritage 2 that was sitting in the closet. I used that machine for a few more years and decided I wanted a canister again.
I scored a nice Electrolux Olympia one off of ebay and i figured I was set. Then somoene was selling a Miele Callisto that was brand new but had a opened box. I ended up buying it for a large discounted price. What I can tell you is that the Miele blows away the older metal tank electroluxes. I was curious of what the new ones were like.

The thread is about a new Miele S5 and Aerus Guardian. I was only trying to make a comparison of different machines and cost of ownership.
Not every household can afford a new Rainbow,Miele or Aerus Guardian or would have the money to budget the upkeep costs.
I don't know anything about the "sick butt" or "silly Rainbow" but you might not want to run down something you are trying to sell and get a fair price.
I guess being a collector I enjoy many types of machines and each has as it's own own good and bad points.

I don't mean to distract, but I would go for a Sebo K3. It's similar to the Miele, but (IMO) made better. Plus the powerhead (again, IMO) is better.
However, if it has to be between the original two, I would go for the ultra lux, only becuse I'd never buy a Miele. We just have too many coming in with serious problems compared to the Sebos.
