Miele C3 Cat&Dog v Lux Guardian Platinum

Hi Vacuumlanders,
I recently purchased a new Miele C3 Cat & Dog. I enjoy the machine but after joining Vacuumland I keep hearing about the Lux Guardian Platinum. How different are these machines? I'm seriously considering selling my Miele and buying the Lux. Is the bump in performance worth the trouble I'd go through to sell the Miele? Also, what should I expect to pay for a new LPG? I have a few other vacuums I could trade in. Any and all help would be much appreciated.

The Lux is a very expensive machine but some on here may be able to help you with that. They run about $2,000 or so. The Lux Guardian Platinum comes in both an upright and canister. The upright has no suction adjustment and no tools on board. The cansiter is pretty similar to Miele Cat and Dog but lacks a telescopic wand. Most regard Lux as having superior tools.

The upright version does come with a tool set that includes an electric hose and side kick. The upright is just Lux Guardian. The canister is the Lux Guardian Platinum.

David, if I was you, I would keep your Miele over the Lux Guardian Platinum.

Yes, the Platinum is a little more powerful than your C3....116" waterlift vs 100" waterlift for the Miele....But, where the Miele has it's advantage over the Lux is in the quality of the bags. Lux is using only a 3 ply HEPA bag, whereas Miele's AirClean bags are 9 ply HEPA bags. What you will notice if you bought the Platinum & used it side by side with the Miele is the Platinum will lose it's suction power sooner with less dirt in the bag than Miele does, when the bag is about 1/2 full. When you look at the cost of bags for both machines, taking into consideration the bag's capacity, both cost about the same to operate.

The two powerheads are roughly the same in performance, no difference over the Miele. However, the Miele does have height adjustment whereas the Platinum does not, & the geared belts Miele uses are longer lasting than Aerus belts. It's not uncommon to see a Aerus or Electrolux needing a new belt around the 10 to 15 year mark, whereas I have yet to EVER see a Miele belt needing replaced on their current powerheads.

The only advantage I will give to the Platinum is the attachments. Yes, the tool quality is slightly better for the Platinum, you get the flip over rug/floor nozzle whereas Miele you have to buy that separately, & the Sidekick is also included. To my knowledge, Miele does NOT offer any electric mini powerhead.

Electromatic - As for the Lux Guardian upright not having any suction adjustment, have you forgotten about the bleeder valve on the hose? Works just as well as any electronic speed control, & doesn't break down!

I'd second with what Rob said, I would stick with the Miele. Bags for Aerus have gone downhill and I wouldn't be surprised if the Miele bags are actually better than the Platinum bags. But I have yet to see belts break on both of them, some Mieles I went ahead and replaced the belt because it already comes with the brushroll kit.

However though, the Guardian Platinum to me feels more solid than Miele and Aerus has always been known as one of the most reliable vacuums out there. What you could do is whenever the time comes to either replace the Miele or if you're looking for a second vacuum, you could try out the Platinum to see if you like it or not.

Thank you for the recommendation. Crazykirbydude - would you mind providing context? What makes the LGP better than the Miele? I like my Miele, I'm just nor crazy about it.

I previously owned a MIele Capricorn (which is a predecessor the C3) and currently have the Lux Guardian Platinum. I prefer the Lux. I did not like the short, stiff hose on the Miele, the hose handle, the short cord length, the small wheels which made it difficult to maneuver on plush carpeting or the small tools. I have no problem with the bags on the Lux...a lot of dirt can be packed into them and suction loss is negligible when it comes to everyday use. It also has the speed control which can be set manually or set to Auto in addition to the bleeder valve on the hose handle. The cord is also 28 feet long.

The new Miele hoses on the new Eco models in the EU have grey/black striping (i.e., different production method/design). Of course I've only seen this with the non-electric hose. I believe they are slightly shorter than the historic C3 hose (maybe to help with airflow of the underpowered unit?). But in the videos they do appear more flexible than the old design. The rigidness of the historic Miele electro and non-electro hoses is probably my least favorite attribute of the C3. Can anyone confirm the new Eco black/grey striped hoses are more nimble?

The Lux is quite heavy around 21 lbs and a bit bulky.

I would prefer the Miele personally.

The Lux Guardian Platinum is surprisingly light weight and easy to maneuver. The HEPA cloth bags don't leak any dirt - my 5 year old pre-motor filter is still white and clean. The LGP is one of my favorite vacuums to use, so much so that I will be featuring it in my monthly article for the Vacuum Dealers Trade Association magazine "Floor Care Journal" which goes to all vac shops in the USA.

My Platinum is one of the very first ever sold. The photo was taken the day I got the machine, along with the iconic Model 30 Elux.

I definitely prefer the Lux over the german machine. The very expensive cost of replacing the german filter every year would, by itself, make that a "no" from me.

Lightweight? What is the actual weight? I thought it was 21 lbs?

You dont have to buy the HEPA filter it still filters very well without it. Only if you are extremely allergic do you need the HEPA filter.

I just looked online the weight is 14lbs.That isn't heavy, you are correct.

The bag is quite small at 2.5 litres and I don't think the power nozzle has height adjustment but I do like them. I was looking at importing a used one from Germany Lux international.

Don't let the Guardians "small" bag fool you-when the fill indicator trips-the bag is WELL stuffed with debris.With the older paper bags you could only fill them about half full before the indicator tripped or-WORSE-the paper bag burst or leaks.The Guardian Platinum is TOO powerful for paper bags!Use the Filtrete ones ONLY!!!It is a GREAT vacuum!!!

Who weighed in. Your knowledge is extremely helpful. I think I'm going to stick with the Miele for now. Most of my house is hardwood and laminate. If I ever moved to a home with mostly carpet I could always use the Kirby right? Thanks again everyone.

Yeah, you can use the Kirby for both hard floors and carpets. The Kirby can be converted to a "canister" of sorts.

If you have WW carpet-use the Kirby for the carpets-then use the Guardian Platinum for other duties-that's how I use mine!
