Lovely and stately vacuums, guys.

Already pointed out I'm sure but the European Z55 & Z62 are dead ringers for the Canadian Z30 and Z50 series. We call it 'The Loaf'. Save for the runners design - your's have skids - and the choice of leatherette covering and the angled blades for the power cord they look identical. I daresay the hose coupler with the ball bearing catch for 360 rotation is brilliantly simple and spreads the side loads evenly around the connection.

Btw Doug, I really appreciate you posting the Z55 manual. Very informative and I like the British terms, The Lounge and The Hall.

I didn't realize the machine end of the hose was the same ball bearing style as the Canadian...you really do learn something new every day. The front and rear ends are really a sight to behold.

Now if I could find one of those beautiful storage boxes...

isnt that the z62 there mike, the new central hose port as it now took the paper bag kit and does the filter cover have the outer rim to take the vapouriser? i had an old 55 given to me as a birthday gift off ebay sold for parts it had the central bag end cap like 62 and the filter cover without the outer rim. had the machine been fitted with new parts or did later 55s come like that? it has no itallic crome lettering up the sides either, would love to know these facts... Also im sure our first filter on the 55 had metal on it like a reinforcement? we replaced them later with 1s like youve shown

also i vaguely remember us buying some sort of perfumed solution to put on the filter in the z55 im sure it was bought from the electrical shop and may even been made by lux ... i can bring the fragrance to mind now if i think about it.... and im going back 35 years at least for this anybody remember ? could there still be avintage bottle lurking around now on ebay or something? i can remember my mom putting small droplets of it onto the filter...

im interested in the canadian versions of these loaf vacuums. until id joined this club id never seen them on sleighs or with the tool caddy or cordwinder, and yes the hose was standard throughout for the loaf with the ballbearings and it wasnt actually airtight with a rubber seal but still worked without leakage. You might hear a bit of a hiss of escaping suction as you pulled the cleaner along, but as you started cleaning it would pull back tight again. i have a feeling your canadian cord connecter was slightly different to ours wouldnt mind seeing some pics of this,along with any others of canadian loaf cleaners as i love them.

continuing the loaf theme as anyone got or got any pics of a yellow and white Trident I think was in the body of the z80 ijust havent seen 1 for well over 30years and 2 / 3 families in our street owned them back then..... would love to see a pic!

Hi:

It appears your 62 had the bayonette cord connection on the machine (2 flat pins on an angle) In Canada the 30 and 50 series machines all still had the two round pins.

I think the scent liquid you were refering to was called T2 by Electrolux - I still have a bottle somewhere.

The Canadian Z30 and Z50 series machines were based on the Swedish design (which is what the English machines are) but with slight modifications (Like the skids)

Si, I wish I had a few examples of the old Canadian Luxes, but the oldest machine in my collection right now dates from 1965. I do remember my grandparents having a Z55 with a cord winder on it...wish I had been old enough to truly appreciate it back then. Dave has a lovely collection of them, though.

cheers Doug for that i wasnt sure i know our z55 z62 z65 challenge, z80, trident, even the z48 and its successor all had the diagonal flat pin connector the 48 connector albiet the same plugged in the top by the handle, however my z25 (labled 1946) again plugs in by the handle like z48 and its connector looks the same(outer shell) but actually fits onto round pins in the port. i cant answer for the z30 i know the connector goes under the exhaust like later model but does it have round or flat pins? i really never thought i bet mike can tell us i think he has a z30. we are talking 1930s for that 1

and as my 25s 1040s and has the round?

excuse my terrible pics folks! im like a cow with a shovel with the old uploading!! I cant understand why nobody wanted this poor thing that runs like a dream. never my claimed by a good home now needs a bit of a bath and makeover now!... will post the pics!

There was a red 55 as well by the look of it. I've come across pictures of it several times on ebay UK. It must have been one of the last ones as it has the hose connection in the center of the plate. Would love to get one

I forgot to ask...does moving the hose to the middle of the front end have any effect on suction/performance, or is it merely a cosmetic thing?

central hose

the hose port was moved to the centre of the cap later in the loaf series when the inner paper bag kit was introduced. it consisted of a round collar that fitted inside the cap where you could attach a paper liner bag to go inside the origional cloth one.Because of bunching the paper bag securely around the collar the port hole needed to be central rather than down low. you could get replacement caps i think to upgrade your older model to take a paper bag.Doug i think that red one is an old z30 with a replacement cap i maybe wrong

Just curious......

I have always wondered why all, if not most, European Electroluxes have model numbers that begin with "Z." Any thoughts or ideas as to why this might be?

Hi Si:

The Red one is a 55 (I have a picture of the information plate on the bottome of it too).

In canada the model 57 was the first one to have a paper bag but they didnt move the location of the hose connection. Instead an extension tube was added to the inside and the bag was fitted over it in the same fashion that the Hoover convertable's bag attaches.

I'm not certain where the Z designator for the series came from but the second letter seems to designate the country of origin. ZB was Canada ZC was England ZA was Sweden. I have seen both ZE and ZK designators on machine for sale in Australia's ebay so I'm not certain which was their designator.

Doug i really didnt know that there was a red 55 and when i said about the z30 i thought it was a slightly different red. i think i do remember seeing a blue one as a kid in the repair shop window

Hey Si: I've also seen a model 48 in the same red. Either they were both done in that colour (probably at the same time) or it could have been a rebuild that was done. Hard to say now.

As the 48 has a matching hose I suspect the colour was original.

Doug my gran had the z48 just like that 1 1951 to 1978 and the motor burnt out and she slung it out much to my despair and replaced it for a modern yellow and brown thingy not quite a 345 but it had the retractable cord but i loved the 48 she had a rubber crevice and grey bakelite upholstry nozzle as opposedto the metal 1 in the shot. wouldnt mind seeing some more 48 pics . yea mate that red 55s a mystery maybe like you say a rebuild. i saw some 55s once with the norvac logo on i think they were rebuilds
