Kirby question

I hear of a lot of people taking about their cam lever going bad on their Kirby with a result of clicker in neutral. What does the cam lever exactly do?

The cam lever engages and disengages the Tech Drive. The clicking noise comes from the gears not fully disengaging because the end of the lever isn't long enough anymore to do its job.

My tech drive on my g4 is slightly starting to click. Would this have any affect on my machine?

You can go to Goodvac.com and they have info on the clicking noise and even steps on how to replace the


cam lock lever. I bought the part, just a few dollars and then opened their website and did step by step


procedure. When done do it in reverse. Fixed my clicking noise.


 


Eventually the clicking noise could cause you to have to buy the whole tech drive with wheels, if not fixed.

Yes, that is the part you need.

Don't worry though. Even if you never address the clicking, it will never cause you to have to buy a new transmission. If anything is going to get worn out, it will be these two parts. The lugs of the element on the right lock into the element on the left. When the cam lever wears out, the lugs don't completely disengage and this could cause these two parts to wear out over time. However, they can be replaced for much less than the cost of a new transmission.

Hello Kirby fans and experts!

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I’d ask a related question regarding the Kirby Tech Drive System.

The Tech Drive on my Sentria 2 is smooth, no clicking and beautiful control so I’m not concerned with my cam lever yet.

My question is this.. the Tech Drive “Neutral and Drive” switch on the back, is it separated between the Neutral and Drive where the lever moves if you push UP on both the Neutral half and the Drive half of the lever! Is this normal or has mine been broken?

I’m attaching pics to help clarify my question. Thanks in advance!

Yes, that is completely normal.

I forgot to include this link. Notice that the brand new pedal in the picture does the same thing. I believe this is a feature that was introduced to reduce the chance of accidentally putting the Kirby in drive if something got caught underneath the neutral side of the pedal.

Replacing the cam lever doesn't always solve the problem. My G5 had the clicks when I got it and still has them, albeit to a lesser degree, after replacing that part. Tearing the machine down was a good learning experience and maybe someday when I'm bored and feel like throwing some more money at the thing, I'll get the gears, tear the thing apart again and install them to see if that helps further. Or I might just leave the thing as-is until it fails and worry about it then. But right now, I'm not bothered enough by the clicks to go through all that.
