Part of me wishes I were close enough to Plano to go over there and a bigger part of me is glad I'm a safe distance away in North Carolina. It would be dangerous for me to go in there.

Tolivac, yes they can (when stressed more), as well as in low speed mode.
I tested a Heritage II today and it drew 5.6A on low with a mild raspy sound and 10.1A on high with a very loud raspy sound. Turned out the grey fan was coming apart and was rubbing on the aluminum under the fan. Note the wear in the fan in picture 1. The drag made it draw excess current. I replaced it with a white fan and it was back to normal - 4.6A low and 5.6A high.

The Legend II that melted down did so because the grey fan was coming apart over time (lots of it worn away and lots of plastic shavings inside). The hub finally detached and jammed the motor hard. The knuckle-headed user kept trying to vacuum carpet with it despite it smoking. The aluminum is discolored and the windings are black. It took some good effort and big hammers to get it apart. Brush holders are melted, too. I will replace the entire motor with a Heritage one.

Some pics of the carnage below (#2 and 3)...

BTW, would you be willing to sell a d50 bag topper and one of the red headlight trim? If so, please email me at kierangegler@gmail
Thanks!

Whoops, sorry for the triple post but I just checked my stock and I just need the headlight bumper. Thanks again

What's in the boxes...

So here is what we have from yesterday's haul...
Some of this I will be keeping and hope to pass the rest on to collectors in need.

I got all the Classics because they have the same bakelite light socket as the D50, D80, S7, and later 5xx models. The power switch and safety switch also fit the D50 and D80. These are expensive or hard to find so these could not get scrapped.

I got some later models for parts, also. One Classic III was too nice to part out so it is a candidate for restoration.

Both Omegas have decent bags so they are almost complete and ready for resto (not by me though)!

I tested all units...
- One Classic had a bad power switch.
- One Classic started on fire (due to brushes being worn to the springs and unit was full of combustible dust. I replaced the brushes and it came back to a normal life!
- One Omega had the brush springs wound around the armature as they were worn that much. It did run a little though! Replacing the brushes and extracting the springs fixed it.
- One Tradition was booby-trapped. While most of these shot a cloud of dust through the exhaust when turned on after 20-30 years, this one shot a bunch of shrapnel! Glad I was not in front of it; see last picture...
- One Classic has a broke metal fan.

All motors had correct current draw. I was amazed, but then again, it's that Kirby quality!

I have already stripped some parts from one Classic to fix some other machines.

So I was messing with Kirby stuff from 10am to 6pm today. Needless to say I am wore out and tired from it. I do feel overwhelmed as well...

Dang

Rob the other thread shows a lineup of 4 amp Kirby's. The farthest one on the left is without trim and looks to be a toggle switch. What model is it.
The lineup I just mentioned is any with a 508 belt lifter.
I am changing every fan out in the future that is grey. I did before was a little naieve they wouldn't crack. I have seen chipped metal ones but holy cow that grey lexan is toast.
You are the man Rob holy cow. You single handidly saved ridiculous amount of Kirby items.
I say he gives you the gold heritage might be a tradition. You deserve it. Your now an expert at breaking down 16 inch nozzle machines.
The Sanders work on any hose it fits on. I've used it with my compact and I put a d80- tradition hose and e7000 on a g series hose. It can work on pre 515 models can use a g series hose but explanation is for another time.
Sanders fit alot of hoses. I have a few and there only Sanders I use as they suck up dust.

I have a random question.
Did they make a classic 3 (2cb) with a zipper the full length.
I am guessing no as the reason to have a full length zipper is for a bagged machine and tradition is first bag setup hence Kirby bag type 1.
Les

Les, I do not know what model that is - I can check next time I am there, if it is still there. Many of those are missing model plates so those would be unknowns. My 505 currently wears a 508 belt lifter.
Yes, that grey lexan goes to crap over the decades. I have a Tradition with a grey fan that looks like a dry Texas riverbed. Needless to say it must be replaced.
I have not started stripping any of those machines, but I did rob some parts from one. I do need to strip some of the worse looking ones as I cannot leave them all stacked on the patio for long.
I may try to restore one Classic and sell it cheap along with the attachments and shampooer set.
I doubt he will give me the gold Heritage - if it does not sell he will take it with him.
I have never seen a full zipper on a genuine Kirby Classic III bag.
I put the two DS50 bag toppers aside for you - see anything else you want or need? A baker's dozen of old vacs maybe? :o)

Ben,
Yes that is what the broke blade sounds like. Vibrates a lot also.

Hey

I have approximately 2 bakers dozen Kirby's already I'm guessing.
A sanitronic 562 manual, cheap shippable stuff. The post office gets you coming and going.
I'd love the gold heritage price is good but I have tuition for next semester coming up and once I put together rainbow silver it should cover it.
If there is a 508 belt lifter I'd like it as they are more rare than black belt lifter and belt caps.

Ben

Thanks I knew you would know.
Rob
The 519 I got had a cracked fan. I'm not kidding when I opened it up it had some dust but the machine was flawless. I threw a metal fan on and it's 1959 again.
If anyone is on the fence the machines I got were immaculate. The 505 508 518 and cr1 motor and coil are pristine. The 505 and 508 I don't have to go through I just need to polish and it's minimal. The 519 I put a metal fan on you would be hard pressed to find any 519 that runs as well as mine.
If my parts machine is what it was called is a cheap machine I'd almost guarantee the fully functioning machines are just as impressive. I'd say mo4e impressive but chaning a fan on a perfect machine you can't get better than that.

I have a spare 508 belt lifter, I just need to retrieve it from my bin of parts. I pulled it off an old polisher, so it is pretty nice. I can send some pics later if interested.

Hey

If in good condition please do. I'm getting an original d50 belt lifter Wednesday. I hope he doesn't send the polisher i have to many.
Les

Hey

I'm okay. I recently noticed my collection of 500 series is 12-14. I think I'm good thanks.

It's sad that the Plano shop closed with all that stock left, and yet here are countless collectors wanting to buy these bits. I would have thought one of the online Kirby dealers would have opted for the lot?
