Smiles

Yes Dave, I usually try to ne lickity split but had extenuating circumstances.
Was waiting for photos to send to my parent in long away Australia so Ms Greene packed in a box coddles in bubble wrap surrounded by packing peanuts is now making her way up to Papa in Canada, Who would think that she survived at least 2 attempts to throw her out but alas she survived so she will now again be with her Challenger family up north.

So both Dave & my parents are destined for sweet surprises & yes thank heavens that there are us protectors of everything good & then some still gloriously surviving in this world!!!!

Restore Complete

Spent all day on this today, it was one of the easiest cleanups I've ever done. I've just got to replace the bumper, and probably the brushroll. What makes this vacuum pretty neat is I believe based on the serial number, it was manufactured in 2/82 and I was born in 3/82. This was the same model my grandfather had, which I always played with as a child when I went to go stay with them. This one will definately be staying in my house for good!

Nice!

Wow- it looks great.

I need to get some work done on my Hoover before I can reveal it here.

Some day- I may have to just dump this hoover and look for another. It is not nearly as nice as that 800 of yours!

Rug Renovator

I haven't cleaned up the Rug Renovator kit yet, but I had to throw it in. I just need to find a nice set of attachments for it now.

Spectacular Kirby find and rescue, Andrew!

Ryan, what Hoover are you referring to?

"I need to get some work done on my Hoover before I can reveal it here. Some day- I may have to just dump this hoover and look for another."

Ugh! horrible word - dump - in reference to one's own vacuum. :-)
Wouldn't it make more sense to get another in trade or at least get another in hand before 'dumping' anything?

Dave

Thanks!

Thank you for all the nice comments. This was a rewarding restoration, much easier than the Sanitronic and G3 I'm working on now... I plan to finish those this summer.

Andrew

looking forward to those..your resto is one for the books ...but i notice on ebay ..other forums ect. that all the talk is about how great the g3 and up are great to restore and the ones to have for a deep clean, performance.,quality, are g3 and up.....seldom do you hear about the before g3 models...so where do the before g3 models fall short, where do they stand out.

Great find Andrew! The Heritage One is my favorite of the Heritage/Legend series. It looks like new after you cleaned it up. That fill tube is interesting, I never saw the heritage cloth one before.

Hand or machine polish?

Did you do that by hand or with a machine polisher? The only time I have used my Kirby Handi Butler is when polishing Kirbys. I don't know where to find the polishing compound. Any suggestions?

Note to Andrew. 3 of my emails to you have been bounced back undeliverable, even the one I copy & pasted your email addy from yours to me. Want to email me from another address, please?

Dave

Looks like new

Hi Andrew
Very, Very nice jod One ok Kirbys best. I have the Heritage 2. The only thing i dont like is those head lights keep going on and off. Again WONDERFUL JOB DOUG

Indeed, Andrew, that is one beautiful looking Heritage. It would definitely seem as if that cloth fill tube is a bojack. My Tradition has the clear vinyl fill tube. Are those auto hose clamps holding each end?

Fill Tube

Karl,

It's about like a hose clamp, but the end of it is press fitted toether. I've pondered removing the entire cloth fill tube, but I really want to keep it original, so have decided to leave it as is. Considering I'm about 98% sure it still had the original belt on it when I got it, and it's got everything else original to it, I really do not wan't to modify it.

Andrew

My hoover

Hey all... well you will see soon!

its in such horrible horrid bad terrible distress shape!

And if it does fail, it is worth 100% trash. It really is very bad.

In the picture I have linked at the bottom of my post, what is the part called with the brass/copper looking strips? I took a Kirby G4 in for service a few years ago and the guy opened it up and showed me how mine was "going bad" and it quickly needed service. I could see little scorch marks on a few of them. I had NO clue what he was talking about and know nothing of the part, so I had to take his word for it and pa the $175 "refurbish fee."

I got it back and noticed no difference in the performance of the Kirby (which is fine because I was working ok before I took it in --- I just needed the hose inside the emptor replaced).

Anyway, FANTASTIC job on the rebuild. WOW it looks gorgeous!

cloth fill tube

my parents bought their Heritage brand new from a Kirby In Home Sales rep back in 81. I remember the day very vividly. The fill tube on that brand new machine was cloth as well. My grandmother bought the exact same model a few months later after trying out moms and loving it. I have that machine now and I had to replace the fill tube about 5 years ago. It was a plastic tube that had cracked when the machine suffered through the infamous Oklahoma City May 3rd Tornado of 1999. Surprisingly, the fan and the fill tube were the only things that had to be replaced. Kirby must have changed the fill tube design at some point from the cloth to the plastic. I do remember the inside of the cloth bag on moms machine being alot more dusty and smelly than granny's since it had that cloth tube. Just my observations. I could be totally wrong.
