Hand or machine polish?
Did you do that by hand or with a machine polisher? The only time I have used my Kirby Handi Butler is when polishing Kirbys. I don't know where to find the polishing compound. Any suggestions?

Very, Very nice jod One ok Kirbys best. I have the Heritage 2. The only thing i dont like is those head lights keep going on and off. Again WONDERFUL JOB DOUG

Fill Tube
Karl,
It's about like a hose clamp, but the end of it is press fitted toether. I've pondered removing the entire cloth fill tube, but I really want to keep it original, so have decided to leave it as is. Considering I'm about 98% sure it still had the original belt on it when I got it, and it's got everything else original to it, I really do not wan't to modify it.

In the picture I have linked at the bottom of my post, what is the part called with the brass/copper looking strips? I took a Kirby G4 in for service a few years ago and the guy opened it up and showed me how mine was "going bad" and it quickly needed service. I could see little scorch marks on a few of them. I had NO clue what he was talking about and know nothing of the part, so I had to take his word for it and pa the $175 "refurbish fee."
I got it back and noticed no difference in the performance of the Kirby (which is fine because I was working ok before I took it in --- I just needed the hose inside the emptor replaced).
Anyway, FANTASTIC job on the rebuild. WOW it looks gorgeous!

cloth fill tube
my parents bought their Heritage brand new from a Kirby In Home Sales rep back in 81. I remember the day very vividly. The fill tube on that brand new machine was cloth as well. My grandmother bought the exact same model a few months later after trying out moms and loving it. I have that machine now and I had to replace the fill tube about 5 years ago. It was a plastic tube that had cracked when the machine suffered through the infamous Oklahoma City May 3rd Tornado of 1999. Surprisingly, the fan and the fill tube were the only things that had to be replaced. Kirby must have changed the fill tube design at some point from the cloth to the plastic. I do remember the inside of the cloth bag on moms machine being alot more dusty and smelly than granny's since it had that cloth tube. Just my observations. I could be totally wrong.
