Hi Folks,

Does anyone know how to replace the belt on an older Kirby Handi-Butler? I've got a Sanitronic 7 with the Mark III. I can't seem to figure out how to remove the grinding wheel from the shaft. I assume it takes the standard Kirby belts like everything else.

Thanks,
Andy

The Handi-butler - - - - - -

Hi Andy - - - The handi-butler takes a larger belt than the rug nozzle or floor polisher does.  I've replaced a couple of them and my guess is that they are getting harder to find as Kirby hasn't made a handi-butler like you have for many years.  Check with the Kirby dealers in your area.  One of them will probably have some.  The attachments for your unit attach magnetically, so the grinding wheel should pull straight out of the unit.  Hope this helps.

Good Luck!

One more quick question about the Handi-Butler. The flexable power take off shaft, can I lube that with white lithium greese at all?

Thanks,
Andy

i lubed the flex shaft with 3 in 1 oil. since the entire shaft for the length of the extension moves, grease wouldn't travel down to the other end or center very well. white lithium gease works well on repacking bearings, however. for most non motor parts of a kirby (ie rug nozzle lock, handle spring, miracle head solid axles) 3 in 1 oil will work just fine.

Drive Belts

@ twocvbloke; I'm reading this post 2 years later so the link you posted on belts is no longer available.
Any help on where to find any specs on correct diameter to buy aftermarket to retro fit? I have only 1 last good working belt on my Heritage 1-HD.
Are the belts different from the Mark II's then the III's or even the later models? I remember my newer belt being too loose on the Mark II off the Heritage but I know 1 was stretched out sitting in on position.

I have used those rug renovator belts if used for a while otherwise very tight.

Finally, I found a used belt that almost fit just right from an old Oreck XL Upright. I ordered a brand new one and it fits. Oreck XL series upright part # XL-0300-604 About $1.50 online shops.

Note: Fits best on this 2nd run 1958 Kirby model 518 w/ Handi-Butler Mark II 2nd run (belt used on late 1958 run 518's - early 561's of 1961 was slightly smaller then previous years and changed back in 1962 w/ all new Mark III and years to end).
Fits a tad tight but breaks in fine on the Mark III of 1962. I use these Oreck belts on my Mark Iv Series with my D50 & onward models till the last of the Heritage 1-HD's

Good luck and hope this helps.
In photo, I'm using an Oreck belt on a Mark II Series Handi Butler (late run) with my 1958 Kirby 518. The Mark II will fit up till the Sanitronic VII as well.
