Kirby G4 Transmission

Hi there, I recently acquired a G4 at a bargain price.
They are one of my favourite Kirbys.
Usually I don't touch the transmission.... but this time i'm up for the challenge!
When I push it back and forth with the motor off (and in neutral), it clicks very loudly.
When I push it back and forth and its on and in Drive, it pushes forward okay, but there is no 'drive' pushing the cleaner back. Does the entire tech drive need to be replaced?
The cleaner came with a new brushroll, outer bag, wheels and cable!
Any info would be greatly appreciated

My first question is, have you ever dissembled and rebuilt a Kirby vacuum before? If your answer is "No", then troubleshooting and rebuilding the transmission gear assembly is not something you want to get involved with.

As for the

clicking in neutral, the Cam Actuator is worn out, not a very expensive part. But it takes an intermediate skill level to replace. Usually if I have a Tech Drive that does not go in one or both directions, I replace it.

So the easiest thing would be to replace the entire transmission? I don't really want to be taking it apart....

In agreement with "sonnyndad" it's might be the Cam assembly that is defective. However, before you replace the transmission first investigate if the Cam assembly is worn. You will need two "Torx" screwdrivers (T15 and T20) to remove the plastic back, cover and the three torx screws that hold the transmission to the main body. Just be careful when removing the foot (on&off) pedal.

Torx

I'm pretty sure the G5 and later use Torx bits.
