Hi everyone... I recently got a Kirby dirt meter thanks to a very sweet friend.... I put it to use and wanted to share some pictures. I don't have the pads, so I just used coffee filters. I don't drink coffee anyway and who needs 200 filters for "guests" LOL :o) I sold Kirbys back in 2002 for a week, and while the experience ruined my life and devastated me, I enjoyed playing with the dirt meter and seeing what the Kirby got up. I've often wished that many of my bagged machines could be bagless just for the times that I wanted to see what they picked up. It's fun and gratifying to see what was in the carpet! I could have kept pulling pads, but it got old fast so I stopped at 6. I ran my Dyson before doing this (and I'd just vacuumed with the Eureka Smart Vac the night before) and there was NO dirt in the chamber of my Dyson before I began this Kirby experiment. I also did the mattress, those are the first two pads (the lightest ones). I vacuum a lot... and I have Electrolux, Rainbow, Filter Queen, Miele, Kirby, F and G Eurekas, Hoovers, Orecks, Dirt Devil Broom Vac, Vorwerk.... I have a lot of vacuums from cheap to high end, and the Kirby still pulled this stuff out! Of course I know the rule in vacuum tests is "he who goes first loses", but it's still amazing to see what came up! Scary too! Keep in mind this is a small one bedroom apartment with very flat carpet. I don't have acres of deep pile for the dirt to hide in! This experiment also reminded me how important it is to change the bag in all vacuums frequently... one pass and the airflow was cut off so badly that the Kirby wouldn't even pick up visible surface litter. Of course coffee filters weren't made for air flow, but still.

My favorite tag line when selling Kirbys (we had a book of quotes we had to read and memorize on our way to the "victims" homes was, "Either the dirt can stay and the Kirby can go, or the Kirby can stay and the dirty can go, it's your choice!" Or after placing the dirty pads all over the furniture, say, "Have a seat, Ma'am!" Poor scared, confused lady would say, "I'm not sitting on all that dirt!" Our response, "Well, you were doing it before, you just didn't know it!"

Doing this demo made me feel like my machines were inferior, and I have several Kirbys!

Good demo

You can also buy the filter type paper at packing stores, the type they use for shipping packages.

Now it is a little hard to believe the Dyson missed the rubber band on the pad in the lower right. I think you threw that one in for emphasis.

I vacuumed a little bit into the bedroom when I did the mattress and that's where the rubber band came from... the Dyson stayed in the living room :o) I wasn't very scientific or methodical! A true test would have been to run each machine in the same exact space for the same exact number of passes at the same speed. I just took the Dyson apart and cleaned the pre motor filter and washed the cyclone assembly out.... there was a good bit of fine dust on the pre motor filter and caked in the cyclones, but it still had tremendous suction. I've cleaned it a few times before and never noticed an increase in performance, but it must make some difference, even if I can't discern it. I think a suction meter should be on my next Christmas list :o)

Thanks for letting me know about the paper at shipping stores!
