Thank you Charles for your excellent website,,ive had many pleasurable hours reading, and looking (drooling!) over your collection. Many of your machines hold special memories for me from childhood.
My dear Grandma had a Kirby DS50 that i was in love with as a child,,one special Aunt had a brown Lux model G with matching PN that she would "Let" me use,,and my other Grandma had a Lux Model E with retrofitted PN 1,,that i was especially crazy about. Seeing your pics brings back many fond memories of these people,(they are all gone now) and the hours of fun i had using their vacs and being to facinated by them.
Just like you, as a child, the first thing i always had to do when entering someone's home for the first time was to find their vacuum, and check it out,,much to my parents FROWNING and discust! (it finally came to a point where my mother would warn me, before enterting someone's home to LEAVE THEIR VACUUM CLEANER ALONE!)
We come from a very small, tight knit community in the midwest, a sort of "Mayberry" type of place, where everyone knows everyone (and has since birth),,and many of the families are related thru marriage,,and everyone was friends with everyone, so going house to house to visit, have coffee, parties,holiday celebrations, family get togethers, ect., was a very common occurance.
As a child, i knew exactly what kind of vac, and where it was kept of every place we visited.
Its really laughable now, in this day and age when i think about it. It seems that back then (1960s-70s) people were more friendly and didnt even think twice about a silly kid comming in their house and dragging out their vacuum. Many friends/relatives were glad to see me comming! - would get their house vacuumed top to bottom for free -And, if i was lucky,,id get a glass of milk or koolaide and a cookie (or something simular) out of the deal too! Haha - good ol days.
So, thank you for all your hard work,,and all that you do,,i know your website brings alot of happiness to alot of people.

Brian, I am so glad you enjoyed yourself at my web site. That's why it's there. Your message really made my day.
I got a big laugh out of your telling how you were warned to "stay away from the vacuum cleaner." It got to the point with my mama that I would hear the very same thing every time we "went a-callin'" (eh Hans?!).
In the car on the way to visit someone, Mama would turn around to glare at me in the back seat, waggle her finger and admonish, "And YOU stay AWAY from their SWEEPER!" Daddy, behind the wheel of whatever old klunker we had at the time, would add a "harrumph" to underscore her warning.
Same sentiment, different accent!
I too remember a lady who had a converted Model E. It had a Model R hose and power nozzle. I used to cut neighbors' grass in the summertime to make money and she was one of my customers. I'd cut the grass as fast as I could so I could get inside to use her Electrolux -- as was the case with most of my lawn-business clients!!
The first time I remember seeing a tan Model G was when I was riding with my dad around all over the rural areas around our home in the Tidewater region of Virginia (we lived on a tiny island called Gwynns Island). Daddy was making extra money (or trying to, at any rate) by selling Fuller Brush products.
We stopped at a big fancy colonial home near Williamsburg where he dropped off an order. The old lady of the house let us in and pinched my cheeks which of course greatly annoyed me.(*) But all was forgiven when I saw in her front hallway a brand-new tan Model G with power nozzle! It was all hooked up and plugged in and ready to go.
When the lady went down the hall to get her purse I whispered excitedly to Daddy, "Look at her new sweeper! It's brand new Electrolux! And it's the DELUXE model!!"
When the lady came back, Daddy mentioned to her, "My son Charles was admiring your new sweeper."
I will never forget how effusively the lady exclaimed, "Oh yes! It's a real JIM DANDY!!"
And of course you read the story about Elizabeth Cundiff's Kirby D50.
You are right... what happy memories.......

(*) There's a scene in the Dennis the Menace movie with Walter Matthau playing Mr. Wilson that always puts me to the floor. Dennis is being babysat by the Wilsons and they're having a Garden Society party. All these old ladies come converging onto Dennis on the front porch, their pinching fingers extended. Dennis exclaims, Oh NOO!!! CHEEK PINCHERS!" And they have at it. It's a hilarious scene.
One time, a lady at church was pinching my cheeks and declared, "Look at those cute dimples!" I, around 8 years old, said, innocently, "Miss Eleanor said that's where a fairy kissed me!" The lady said, pinching me more, "Yew ara the CUTEST little baway I've evah sain!" (When I use that line today, it elicits rather a different reaction hahahahaha!)

HAHA,,i love it Charles!! Geee, you had ALOT of opportunities to check out people's vacuums! What fun!
I know ive probablly told this before, but one particularly sweet neighbor lady we had once stands out in my mind.
Her husband was a "gadget man",,always had the latest and greatest household gadgets of the time. They only had one daughter, who was away at college at the time, so no little kids or grandkids around,,except for me!
They were the first people i ever knew that had a microwave oven (late 1960s,early 70s),,and they had installed of all things (be still my heart),,, a CENTRAL VACUUM!!! Oh man i was absolutely INTHRALLED with it,,reminded me of something the Jetson's would have! The inlet ports,,the long hose, and all of the attachments,,,was like a dream to me.
The neighbor lady would let me come over and use it whenever i wanted to,,,bless her heart,,she knew how vacuum crazy i was.
She even took the time to move her livingroom furniture out so that i could vacuum thoroughly. Of course little did i realize that this vacuuming was really HARD WORK,,to me it was pure fun!
I will always be grateful to her for making a little kid feel so important.
