Kirby 514 problem

Hi, I'm new on Vacuum land and my Kirby model 514 has been having a problem. After I use it for a little while,the sound decreases. I am not sure what is wrong with it and I do not know how to fix it. I would really appreciate some help. Thank You!

I think your carbon brushes might need to be replaced... last known part number was 118067S (replaced original 1180S). They should be replaced if they are either defective or worn down to at least 3/8" long.

The sound you describe that decreases as the motor warms up could also be caused by the motor bearings going bad. As time goes by the grease inside the bearings dries up causing friction inside the bearing that makes noise and slowly destroys it. The noise is loudest when the motor is cold.


 


Replacing the bearings is tricky and requires special tools. Unless you are experienced in working on electric motors, it would be best to bring your 514 to a Kirby service center or a regular vacuum shop that services Kirby's.


 


It may also be motor brushes as Ben states above. These are easily replaced by you.

BUT

If you don't know the service history of this 514, have the carbon brushes replaced AND the bearings repacked during the same service call.

I do not think it is a bearing problem because my Sweeper Vac model 45 has the problem that you described and the Kirby does not have that sound .I will replace the brushes first and try the bearings if the brushes do not work. Thanks again!
