Hi all. I was wondering if anyone had a Kirby 508-510 available for sale. All original would be nice even if it needs some work. I'm trying to replace my grandmothers old machine. She had a beautiful old Kirby and I was hoping to inherit it. However my grandfather threw it away when the motor started making noises. Hope I can find one like the one pictured.

Thanks
Keith

P.S. I borrowed the photo from this forum. Thanks http://www.vacuumland.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-PROFILE_DISPLAY.cgi?display=aeoliandave

Hello, I have a few extra old Kirbys. One of them may be a 510, 511 or 512; I'll have to look at it. All of these models are basically the same with just some slight differences in attachments. Would you want just the machine or the attachments as well? It is all original with the original bag, cord and trim. If you're interested I can send you some photos. I can either send it as-is, needing a "Spa Treatment," or I can clean and buff it out now that I can actually get into my workshop. :)

Yes, Yes and Yes

Thanks for responding. I don't really care of the model number as long as it has the flipper on/off switch and is as original as possible. I'd love to see more photos and what the price would be with attachments and with buffing. I'd love to have as many original attachments as possible. I can pretty much fix anything as I use to restore antique cars but one tool I don't have is a buffing/polishing machine. I guess I could always try and use a handi-butler.

Thanks again.
Keith

The Model 512 was sold in 1952. Here's a really nice, 99%-original specimen. (I took off 1% because the male plug has been replaced, albeit with a really cool and period-appropriate plug!) It even still has the metal brush roller in the rug nozzle, and all the original attachments. I also have the instruction manual for it.

Here are some photos, and the link below (at the very bottom, just under the last photo) will take you to a short video demonstration. (When you go to the YouTube video, select 1080P/HD resolution for the best-quality video.)

WOW!!!!That Kirby is just like the one I used as a child.My Mom said it was bought the year I was born-'51-guess hers would have been a 511?Later in time the attachments got lost.Just the machine only-then it succumbed to the Rapid City flood of 1972.Used the Kirby and a "Wheelbarrow" Kenmore canister to clean my room and house as part of the "Duty roster" for us kids.I enjoyed when I got the vacuuming part!The KN canister was my Stepmoms she said she bought it in 1958-was a pink color.Great machine.Would love to run into one of those KN machines and the similar Kirby like what was shown!My Dad used to dump the Kirby bag in one of the gardens!-Only garden I knew of that had carpet fluff in it!

Was the 509 or the 510 the first machine to have the Handi-Butler device? Charles says the 510 was the first, but Kirby in its 1980s history page (as included in the Heritage II "Here's Proof" folder) says the 509 was the first.

Anyone who has studied Kirby company literature knows that it's rife with errors as to their previous model history.

I stand by my statement that the Handi-Butler first came out with the Model 510 if by no other basis than the fact that the 510 was the first instruction manual in which the Handi-Butler was mentioned or shown.

In the 510 and 511 manuals, it is noted "Optional Equipment." In the 512 manual, that notation was removed. So it seems safe to assume that from the 512 on, the Handi-Butler became part of the standard set of attachments -- probably because, priced at $24.95 in those days, it was a hard sell. ($25.00 in 1950 had the same buying power as $243.22 in 2013. -- see link.)

Furthermore, in case a more compelling case must be made, I have a set of official letters on company letterhead from the Kirby company to the sales force listing the cost of the machine and the various components.

For the Model 509, there is no listing for the price of a Handi-Butler.

The 510 price list has "Model 2510 Handi-Butler - $24.95."

The 513 price list (skipping a few models for brevity's sake) has "Model 2513 Handi-Butler - $24.95."

There were only minor changes in the Handi-Butler from the "Model 2510" to the "Model 2514" (Model 514 machine).

In 1955, the optional flexible shaft attachment was added to the "Model 2515" Handi-Butler. The Flexible Shaft cost an additional $14.95.

In 1956, the Handi-Butler was completely re-engineered and re-styled with new color-keyed housing elements and the addition of the Handi-Sharpener accessory for sharpening knives. However, the price for the all-new Handi-Butler remained at $24.95 and the cost for the Flexible Shaft remained at $14.95.

What can I say ....... I do my research!

But I'm not perfect ... Especially when I am writing stuff at 3 or 4 in the morning! When I have been positively shown to be incorrect about something, I am always glad to correct my mistakes as I do want my web pages to be as accurate as possible for the sake of research and documentation.

I will say, I have a very, very long list of corrections and additions to make to my "Kirby 500 Series" web pages. There are just so many hours in a day...............

~~~~~~~
A couple of footnotes:
From March 5, 1953 to May 10, 1953, the price for "Kirby Model 513 with Standard Set of Attachments" jumped from $123.45 to $130.95. In today's money, that would be an increase from $1,061.58 to $1,126.08! Those 513s must have been flying off the shelf to justify such a steep increase!!
In 1956, the completely redesigned "50th Anniversary Model 516" -- trumpeted in Kirby literature as "The first totally new, dramatically redesigned Kirby in over 20 years!" -- was priced at $228.00 for the complete set of vacuum cleaner, attachment set, Power Polisher, Sprayer, and Handi-Butler+Flexible Shaft, or $1,953.32 in today's money. The "Kirby Upright Only" was priced at $142.45, or $1,220.40 in today's money.
In 1960, the Model 560's retail price for "Kirby Complete," consisting of the vacuum cleaner, attachment set, Power Polisher, Sprayer, Surface Nozzle+Swivel Connector, and Handi-Butler+Flexible Shaft was $248.00, or $1,936.77 in today's money. The "Kirby Upright Only" was $151.70, or $1,299.64 in today's money.
Hi
Hi, I always thought the Kirby Handi-Butler was introduced at some point in the 509 run as it was released in 1949 as it say in this Kirby ad from the time. I'm sure it says the same in my 510 proof book but that's buried somewhere so I can't check that at the moment.
Great Kirby by the way!!
Well, as I said, I certainly am not above making errors in fact-finding. It does indeed appear from this advertisement that the Handi-Butler was introduced in 1949 and thus with the 509. One can assume that it came out after the initial run of the model, which would explain why it's not mentioned in the instruction manual nor on the factory price list letter for the 509.
Yep...
It's something Kirby seem to do on allot of with their machines and start introducing something through the run of a certain model.
It makes our job harder as collectors to figure when something changed.
Charles,
The Handi-Butler changed to the "Mark II" version midway into 518 sales. I know, because the Kirby service manual says that belt #1590 (also used for the 505-515 upright nozzle and power polisher) was used on the Mark I models from mid-1949 to early 1958. From the Mark II onward a dedicated belt, part #405058 (since NLA from Kirby) was used.
"Mark III" was used for the version from the 562 through the Dual Sanitronic 80, the "Mark IV" lasted for the Classic and Classic Omega, and the "Mark V" (no Handi-Sharpener) was used on the Classic III, Tradition and Heritage.
510 Kirby...
I have never been much of an upright person, but the 510 Kirby I bought over the weekend is really impressive, it lifts the rugs right off of the floor!
