Kiirby G7 two speed motor

Hi All I am wondering why The Kirby UltimateDiamond Editin two speed vacuum was the only one with theswitch on the top of the unit that could control the units speed. wondering if they had trouble withthe switch. please let me know if you know. thanksDoug

That switch

put the machine in "delicate mode" so you could vacuum more delicate floor coverings without damage.  In effect, that switch made the Diamond Edition a 4 speed machine.  Two speeds in normal mode and two different speeds in delicate mode.  I questioned the Kirby Company about them removing the switch when they came out with the Sentria, and they said it caused too much confusion with it's customers.

The use of the delicate speed was similar to opening the Suction Relief Vent (a feature on the 516 to early Tradition rug nozzles). But on those oldie machines, the headlight cap had to be all the way down toward the nozzle if the SRV was open.

Suction Relief Vent

I read about how the headlight cap must be down and wondered about this. What difference would it make if the headlight cap was up or down? And about the Delicate Switch, my guess would be that people would continually use it in delicate mode and it would burn up the motor.

Diamond vs Sentria

I have both Kirby Diamond's and Sentria's.

I really like the optional power down switch on my Diamond Edition machines. I wish Kirby had kept this option on the Sentria models as well.

The two speed switch actually allowed the Kirby to run longer than normal if used in the low speed position (wear on the motor is lowest at the lowest speed). The switch used a circuit board to control the motor power, it was the circuit board that was problematic.

kirby G7

Hi Tom I have a chance to get a G7 for a very good price due to the fact that you say the circuit board could cause trouble i am not sure what to do. The unit looks and sounds bran new and checks out fine. Please advise me. Thank you Doug

You'll most likely, as a collector, never use it enough to have circuit board problems. If the circuit board ever goes out, just get a new one. I got a Diamond from an estate sale for $10, always use it on Low speed. But with 608 vintage cleaners, and a store full of new ones, I don't think I've used it 10 minutes the entire time I have had it.

kirby G7 Love it

Hi Tom Happy 4th I took your advice and got the Diamond g7. very nice vacuum. tramsmisiom seems to run very smooth so we wil see.I really love kirbys and Hoovers, also Air ways. One day i would love to get the Kirby 505 with the black and gold bag all shined up also the Hoover 65.maybe some day. Here on Long island New York it is very hard to get older vacuums. Take care Doug
