Kenmore Progressive thrift store find

Help Support VacuumLand:

I don't believe Sam's Progressive is from 2005. I think the last ones of that style were about 2004. In 2005 they came out with the second type that moved the filter door to the back and the Powermate Jr stored in a compartment on top. They also changed to the T shaped Powermate instead of the one like Sam's.

Rob, one small thing I noticed in what you said about the PN on the current vacuums. The PN on lime and orange canisters is very close to the ones on the white and blueberry Progressives. There is a slight difference though, as the lime and orange have the wheels on the side and the Progressives have them on the back. Also the reset button is square on the Progressive PN and round on the other two.

Sears seems to take the power nozzles from past generation Progressives and puts them on the lower end canisters when they change to a new model. The PN on Sam's Progressive for example, was later used on two lower end canisters, the guacamole and sky blue models from about 2005-2008.

If bagintheback is reading this, he would have the 2004 and earlier Kenmore Progressive models, because the 2005 and up models to him look hideous.

Picture off eBay of Kenmore Blueberry model 21614. Notice rear wheels are round with rubber coating. One on each end on rear of power nozzle. This is the same design on the lime, orange, blueberry and white. Cen-Tec power nozzle CT20DX. The motors, agitators and wheelbase design are exactly the same for each one.

For years Kenmore used the CT14DX on its upscale models and CT12DX on some lower end models. Later around 1997 Sears came out with the Progressive as seen in this thread with the CT18DX, then around 2005 they started using the CT20DX.

All of these power nozzles are still available and manufactured by Cen-Tec Systems. They can all be seen in various central vacuum system kits and under different names. Nutone used the CT14DX for several years as their CT600 powerhead, they also used a CT18DX with dirt sensor as their CT650.

The Panasonic MC-CG902, MCCG917 and MCCG983 all use CT18DX.
Granted over the years Cen-Tec has made little tweaks in some of these. Earliest editions of the CT14DX had 2 rows of replaceable brush strip and a beater bar, it also had a geared belt. Current edition of the CT14DX has the wooden chevron just like the other CT18DX and CT20DX and airflow channels have been added instead of a completely flat front lip to the agitator cavity. Early editions of the CT20DX had a motor shutoff protection which was easier to reset with a pen or other small implement as it was a thin recessed red plastic pin, and many of the CT20DX series have a round push button that is easier.

Close up pic

2006 Kenmore 25513 power nozzle, Cen-Tec model CT20DX. The base is a dark gray color compared to the Blueberry power nozzle which is an off white base. Also the older style had a slightly different agitator with little brush tufts extruding from raised plastic on the side around the belt. The newer design tends to be wood on that side of belt with longer tufts of softer brush.

There should be 4 screws that come out....2 right by the hinges on the bag cover, & the other 2 are hidden under the gray plastic cordwinder button. You will need to pry the cordwinder button off with a flat blade screwdriver. Once inside, the black relay box will be right between the cordwinder & the motor, & it is held in place with 2 screws. Take a picture BEFORE you take the relay out, as well as make notes of which color wires go where on the relay, so you know how to re-wire it correctly. While you are inside the motor compartment, make sure you remove the foam wrap filter on the motor & give it a good rinse....I guarantee you that by now, it will be filthy.

Best of luck with the repairs....Rob
