Kenmore canisters

Hi all I service many kenmore canisters and I find it is very important to remove and clean the filter that surrounds the motor. This filter accumulates a lot of dust that can make the motor run hot and ware out. The last whispertones are especially bad the motor filter is made of thick felt that gets packed with dirt.

Packed with dirt!

Like anything else it gets packed with dirt, because the machines are packed with neglect. No bag, or a bursted bag is what lets this happen. If only people took care of the things that cost them $400. A Kenmore canister price is nothing to sneeze at!

Good for us, we get them for next to nothing. It is funny though I have only seen two of those machines with shot motors. Most of the time the cord reel is broken, or my ever favorite the center front wheel is broken off of the plastic housing. These are my favorite daily drivers. I prefer the whisperbelt model with the dirt sensor, and the adjustable wand. Nothing compares for cat litter cleanup on straight suction. I like the bare floor/wall tool!

Yes those whispertones and progressives are great vacuums.I always get them at the auction sometimes for under 10.00,and sell the parts in my Ebay store.They are easy to service and they have good lamb motors.

My Kenmore Progressive (Elegance in Canada) Canister motor b

only a few years after purchase. I took care of it very well - replacing bags and filters often, and avoiding suction lock that causes the red light to go on. Wish I had known that the sound foam cover on the motor needs washing as well.

My question to all of you: How do you take the main unit apart to get to the motor? I can see no visible screws to loosen. Or can you remove the motor foam cover by just removing the HEPA filter in the top compartment? And once you get the filter out, what's the best way to clean it so that the exhaust air flows through it properly?

cleaning the motor filter

Remove the two screws next to the plastic hinges while the bag compartment is open,then remove the the cord release bar by prying it up with a screw driver. under the bar remove the last two screws and lift up the lid and you are in. Lift the motor shell with the motor in disconnect the two wires pull off the foam and wash.

Just want to double-check with you... how do you pry off the cord rewind bar without breaking anything? What keeps it in place? Just want to know how much force needs to be applied and where to apply it in order to remove it without damaging the vac....

how do you get to the filter in a whispertone? I got one from the trash,but it doesnt have much suction and I dont know how to get to the filter. It has the electric hose with the on/off switch in it, like the progressive does, and it is the same color as the blue progressive.

Pulling off the cord rewind bar

I use two flat head screw drivers there are three plastic tabs that need to unhinge and a small spring will also come out.To Work it off you will have to use some force then it will pop off. You will find the two screws under this cord rewind bar.
