Hi all, I am new to vacuumland (but no stranger to automaticwasher.org where I am also known as 'turquoisedude') and I wanted to share a recent thrift-store find... A vintage Hoover Lark!

It's a model 5704, made at the Hoover plant in Burlington, Ontario.
I was wondering what vintage this model might be? It still has a cloth bag.

Here's the only flaw... The retractable brush is missing.
Can this part still be found? If so, is it possible that the average vacuum repair shop might have these parts? If not, are there on-line sources?

Hi Paul!
Fabulous find! I think those are from the early 60s - 1962/63 or so. I do have one myself. I'll have to dig through my spare brushes and see if I have one that size. There is actually a paper bag that goes inside of the cloth bag... those are way NLA, but they were the style "T" bag. I probably have spares of those, too, but no clue where they are at the moment.

I always find it interesting the way Hoover would use the same name for different types of vacs. Was not Lark an upright in the 50's?

Fred - OMG I think I actually have a couple of those bags! I have a bad habit (well, depends who you ask, I suppose...) of picking up vintage vac bags whenever I see them at Thrift Stores and garage sales. Thank you so much for the information!

Update on the brush situation
I figured that it might be able to adapt a modern brush to the older Lark carpet and floor attachment. I found this late-80s plastic Hoover tool in a box at a local thrift store.

The brush is not a perfect fit, but it will do until I can find another solution! The only hiccup is that when setting the nozzle to the rug position, I have to hold down the brush slightly to lock it into place. Not perfect, but by golly, it works!
Now I need to find some of the disposable bags for this one... The ones I have are for a later version that was called the Handy-Vac.

Surely Chris would have exclaimed "that's a Hooverette" when he saw it (or maybe he hasn't LOLOL) as that is what they were called here, although ours had a handle running the length of the body.
A couple of years ago (just for a lark LOLOL) I tried fitting a power nozzle to one of mine and it actually worked quite well, to the extent that I would have almost made provision for a PN outlet on the cleaner (it works but its not the best example I have) and might still do if I turn up a spare power nozzle.
Even here paper bags are rare (it had something like a 20 year run here) but bags for Junior/Convertible models should be OK although they may need to be cut down a little, they just fit inside the cloth bag and folded back over the top (of the cloth bag)
