A couple of years ago, two VCCC members conspired to send me a wonderful surprise gift, a factory-reconditioned Electrolux Model G, done up in beautiful dark-gray wrinkle finish paint with light-gray trim. The motor and cord winder were overhauled and it just runs like a top! Very sweet and smooth sounding. I would use it along with my other Electroluxes and kept it in my display unit.
On moving day, one of the guys who came to help was a friend name Jorge. He's a real nice young man. Arlee and I have known him 5 or 6 years, and is sort of an "adopted son" to us. Arlee in particular has taken him under his wing and mentored him, giving him guidance and wisdom as he went through college, graduated last year, got his first job, and has just gotten his first apartment.
As we were hauling an endless stream of vacuum cleaners out to the truck, Jorge saw my Gray G. "Ohhhh, it's so pretty!" he said. "I like that one a lot!" I told him it's a really great vacuum cleaner, one of my favorite Electrolux models. He could hardly believe me when I told him it's 50 years old, from the year 1960! (It's one of the early-model Gs.)
Well, last week Arlee and I went to Jorge's new apartment for dinner. As we ate, the subject of vacuum cleaners came up, coincidentally enough. I asked him what sort of vacuum he had, and he said "Something I got at Best Buy, and I hate it! It's ugly and noisy and plastic and does not do a good job at all. I wish I had a better one."
Later on he showed it to me. It's a cheapie upright -- yes, as he said, ugly, plastic and noisy!
In the car on the way home, Arlee said "Why don't you give Jorge that Electrolux of yours that he likes so much. He hasn't stopped talking about it." I told Arlee that it was a special machine to me since it was a gift, and he said, "You've got a thousand vacuums ... you can't spare one of them, since he likes it so much?"
Point taken.
So the other night I brought out the Gray G, added a nice matching electric pigtail hose, a power nozzle, attachments, and a supply of bags. I called Jorge and said I wanted to come over, that I had a surprise for him.
When I got there and he came to the door and saw me carrying the Electrolux he yelled "Ohhhhhh! You are giving me that??!" I said yes. He gave me a big hug and said, "Oh thank you! I love it so much, it's so beautiful, like a sculpture!"
I brought it in and showed him how to use it and he gave it a test drive. He was beaming from head to toe as he steered the purring power nozzle across the carpet. Then he went into the kitchen and used the bare-floor brush. He was so excited, and couldn't stop exclaiming what a wonderful vacuum cleaner it is. "And it's so quiet! I love the soft sound it makes! I'm going to call him 'Mr. Suckalux!'"
So, I thought y'all might enjoy reading about this very happy new Electrolux user, especially the two very special friends who gave me this machine! It's gone to a very appreciative new home and I hope that's okay.
