Last day for the Koons exhibit so I made the trip uptown on the 6 train.
Not too happy with the pics, but the fluorescents in the exhibits played havoc with my iphone.
Overheard a viewer comment on the, "sexually provocative" appearance of of the machines, "lying next to each other like that."[this post was last edited: 10/19/2014-22:51]

All that fuss over Shop Vacs lol go figure. He could have put something else in place of them like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, MCM or Rolex...something from that era!

Info about:

Another example is The New, a series of vacuum-cleaners, often selected for brand names that appealed to the artist, which he had mounted in illuminated Perspex boxes. Koons first exhibited these pieces in the window of the New Museum in New York in 1980. He chose a limited combination of vacuum cleaners and arranged them in cabinets accordingly, juxtaposing the verticality of the upright cleaners with the squat cylinders of the "Shelton Wet/Dry drum" cleaners. At the museum, the machines were displayed as if in a showroom, and oriented around a central red fluorescent lightbox with just the words "The New" written on it as if it were announcing some new concept or marketing brand.

You beat me to making a thread about this!! We went to see it on 9/13; there was a line around the side of the building to get in, although it was Columbus day. We had gone to NY for a wedding and spent a few days in the city. This was on the top of my list, and I'm so glad I was able to see it in person. Here are some of my pictures - yes, they were very difficult to photograph with the blaring flurescent light, but I'm so glad we were able to photograph the art!

Nice..

much better pics Fred.
The line was especially long on the last day, around the block and up another 100 yards. I was lucky as someone leaving gave me their old admittance sticker so i skipped the line. Before you call me a scofflaw know that I would have entered for free anyway as i have a family pass. So more the rapscallion than scallywag i be...

Nicholas - I'm with you. Though it was great to see vacuums used as art, I'm just not a fan of his work. I saw his show at the De Young in San Francisco in the early 90's. Also on display was his huge sculpture of Michael Jackson and his monkey.
