TriStar canister vacuums

I love both my CXL & EXL; & both outclean everything else I currently own in both houses. Not even today's vacuums or my Ridgid shop vac can come close to either TriStar. :)

If there is any vacuum that can beat a TriStar, that I'll have to see someday.

I. M. O. I think the EXL has more suction than my 2-speed CXL because both have 2-stage motors.

Hopefully, I plan to go to the VCCC Convention & take the EXL.

I professionally clean houses for 18 years with power nozzle

Your Eureka Express canister depending on the model number would have come outfitted with a VGIII agitator brush. As far as power nozzle for carpeting the Express power head on this canister is very good for carpet cleaning. At the same time this unit has an uncomfortable hose handle, suction is good, but not great and bare floor brush was not included as an onboard tool, and I do not know of a mini electric power head to run on this unit.

Look for a canister that uses a universal fit hose end that you can fit other manufacturers attachments to. This will be most beneficial. Since no machine is perfect it's better to find the unit with suction, power nozzle, filtration, hose length and comfort that you want and then customize attachments otherwise. By doing so you'll truly end up with a vac capable of accomplishing all of your needs in the end. ***The Kenmore Progressive White, Blueberry and Red all have very comfortable hose grip but tool end is not universal and attachments for this machine other than powermate Jr. are quite unimpressive!!!

One thing you should think about and many others would recommend, is that it would work better to have a second set of wands strictly dedicated to your bare floor brush and keep your power nozzle continuously attached to the other set of wands. Quick release connections on canisters break easy, the wiring connections get burnt up and despite them being very convenient is not a good practice in the long term to be continuously changing off the power head for a bare floor brush.

Pet hair will stick to most any bristle on a bare floor brush. However it seems to stick the least on horsehair designed models, which also prove to be very gentle for most any surface while dusting the floors very efficiently and working well. The Kenmore/ Panasonic style bare floor brushes are very short harsh bristles and the tools themselves are only about 9" wide. I recommend looking to a universal fit bare floor brush from your local vac shop or online that's about 12" wide, horse hair bristles, and gaps or varied bristle length to allow for better ability of sucking dirt in and not pushing it away. Also try out the swivel necks some are much easier to swivel and more maneuverable than others. Many new bare floor brushes on the market have wheels. The brushes themselves work good, I recommend removing the wheels from them if you buy that style!!! You may also like the Miele Parquet tool--it uses felt pads to clean the floor-- intuitive.

The 2 main mini electric power heads for canisters that I can think of are the Electrolux Sidekick and Kenmore PowerMate Jr. The Electrolux Sidekick I have never been impressed with. The brush just doesn't do a good job for me and angling is awkward. The Powermate Jr. does a good job on low profile rugs and upholstery but on medium to deep pile carpets they're very hard to use. The front design of the current version has ridges to allow for airflow. These ridges on a surface without wheels, just makes it very hard to use on a carpeted step, it sinks into the pile and gets stuck rather than gliding and grooming over it. For this situation I would look towards an air turbine nozzle such as the Wessel Werk or Hoover Windtunnel turbine tool. Not all turbine tools are created equal, I have found these 2 to work the best. I have no problem whatsoever with my Hoover air turbine nozzle on either my Anniversary Windtunnel canister or original series Hoover Windtunnel canister.

Another option I think you should look at is getting a separate electric powered hand vac with rotating brush. The Hoover Sidewinder/ Twistnvac works well. Or its also very easy to find a Dirt Devil 103 or similar model. I use a snugger belt on my Hoover Sidewinder hand vac than Hoover original. It works much awesome, pulling out pet hair like a magnet and really lifting the pile! They're noisy but work good.

With all of that said the canister I recommend you getting is a Simplicity Verve, Riccar Pristine, Riccar Impeccable, Riccar 1700, or similar. I think you'd be very impressed by a Tacony product. Variable suction, powerful power heads, wide variety of attachments with universal fit hose to fit any manufacturers tools, very quiet, HEPA cloth bags, sealed systems, HEPA filtration, terrific warranties, well built, long lasting, durable, easy to buy parts that are reasonably priced. Another machine you may want to look at is the Royal Lexon SR30020.

Mieles are nice, I think you would enjoy one. Things to think about for this are: do you want a headlight? If so the SEB236 is their only power head with a light. The SEB217 is a very lightweight power head with small motor and very soft bristles. Most any other powerhead on the market will run circles around this. It is meant for throw and other light area rugs. Aerus machines are well built with terrific suction. Many vacuum shops have refurb models in store that you should look at and try out before buying one anywhere!! I find many of their power heads aren't as powerful and have softer bristles than others on the market. Your Express power nozzle is MUCH better over some Lux heads. But you need to try them all out as they vary. I do not like the upholstery nozzle on Aerus/ Lux, the plastic flap wings with no bristles, rubber fingers or otherwise have scratched up delicate upholstery while cleaning terribly. Also I hate the flip over reversible combo barefloor tool/ carpet tool. They are ugly, short, don't clean well in my mind. This attached to Lux wands and I have to arch my back to use this tool. Electrolux does not have telescoping wands that I know of, and I'm only 5'7" so that's saying something if I'm uncomfortable using it!!! Oh how I would love to be 5'10" or so!!

Machines I would definitely avoid: Kenmore Progressives with new style hose because they do not fit standard tools. Kenmore Intuition canister- built in bare floor brush is terrible, power head has many durability issues with connection and just a very bulky, "junky" system for cleaning carpet. Any Sebo canister-- very underpowered power nozzles, overpriced for parts, and in general, not user friendly machines.

I know I've probably listed too much info here for you to absorb in one sitting!!! I could talk for hours about power head canister vacs, they are my passion and joy. I have used countless numbers of them over the years. Feel free to private message or email me any questions or further advice. I've been professionally cleaning houses for 18 years with power head canister vacuums!!! I look for machines that perform to get a house truly clean while being user friendly and durable enough.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING, or make sure you have a fair return window. Suction on most machines today is quite comparable. I think you're mostly shopping features, durability and power nozzle!!!

canister vacuums

Much good information above.I would agree that QUALITY is a concern with newer Sears.I see every week problems with motor, hose, wand, power nozzle brush & wheels, etc. The Meile is exellent but with a huge variety of models, attachments, prices and more. One of the BEST EVER modern canisters is the Electrolux/Aerus LE/6500 styles as in no 1 & 3.(the EBay vac has wrong wands and crevice)These are best with newer vinyl hoses and give you 4 ply self sealing bag, after filter, less weight with plastic body, extra wands for floor tool(newer has cut outs in front bristle),gear belt with reset and more. The crevice,rug/floor tool and dusting/upholstery brush can clean anything the power nozzle and Sidekick doesn't.The extra wands can be added to the power nozzle wands for high ceilings.Elux cordwinders are one of the best. Many prefer the 'old' style wand system to the newer square plastic with the swivel elbo that can be troublesome after enough miles.I know of 2 that were found within 25 miles of here in the last 2 weeks at different thrift stores, both good and complete and less than $25 dollars!Estate sales can be a good source as the older people would have quality canisters and when they pass away the children & grandchildren want bagless uprights. -Good Luck-Happy Vacuuming.

Do the majority of the Kenmore's issues occur because of user error, or are they really just that terrible? If I go Electrolux, should I stick with the basic metal wands(which I think can fit universal tools) or go with the deluxe plastic that swivels?

Well the Kenmores seem to have been not as good as they used to be. Nathaniel, I'd suggest going for a Bissell Clean-Along or a Digipro for a PN canister.

Kenmores are suffering greatly from cheaper motors being in them. In general they are not near what they used to be. The Panasonics seem to at least have a better grade of plastic used on them. If you like Kenmore features, then I would go with a Panasonic machine. Those are better quality and similar style. I think a Kenmore burning at the wand connection is primarily user but many other problems are the machine itself.

I have to disagree with Director 12. The Bissell Clean along canisters have a very small opening to agitator area in the power nozzle and agitator brush is very very soft. Not very effective. The Bissell Digipro is an older style unit. Its been on the market for over 10 years and Bissell had made no changes or improvements to it. I have emailed their customer support a couple of months back as I was debating getting one. However Bissell said that they do not manufacture or no of a bare floor brush that can be used with that canister. They said they recommended using the power nozzle using the on/off bare floor switch. I find this useless. I like a separate bare floor brush for a vacuum.

I have also yet to see ANY vacuum store have a Bissell Digipro on the showroom floor. That right there tells me something about the quality of the vacuum!!!

The Hoover Platinum canister is a good vac if you don't mind bagless. Also there are customer reviews with the hoses circuits going bad.

Pretty soon Hoover will have a canister similar to the Royal SR30020 and those units are wonderful, I think. Reasonable price, good quality, universal fit of other attachments, sealed HEPA filtration, Hoover Windtunnel turbine tool included, 4 position height adjuster. VERY COMFORTABLE, wonderful hose hand. Powerful power head. Go Vacuum recommends it!!

Limited selection. Quality for current Eurekas is not good!

Current model Hoover's are ok, but options are limited. Many of us collectors seem to like bagged over bagless since they filter better, overall last longer and you don't have to empty dirt bins after each use.

As far as Hoovers. I don't count the Duros model at all. To me the Duros is just a Sanyo canister, its not a true Hoover by any means, and there is no bare floor brush for it. This leaves Hoovers ONLY OTHER BAGGED POWER TEAM option to the Windtunnel. Sorry but I like selection!!! The Anniversary Windtunnel is a good machine but does have problems. I like the new suction unit. Its well sealed, good filtration, great suction. Slow start motor, 4 swivel caster wheels. Hoover seems to have corrected issues with the circuit board. However what it suffers from are as follows:
1. Lousy hose. Very awkward manuevering, and uncomfortable handle grip. I've used many canisters over the years. This hose is probably by far the most awkward next to the Dyson DC23 canister hose.
2. High Speed motor. I miss a Hoover that sounds like a "Hoover". This one doesn't, it has no similar characteristic sound to a PowerMax, Windtunnel, Dimension, Celebrity or any of its predecessors!!
3. Attachment set is mediocre. I don't like the new style extra short, extra thin crevice tools that many companies are using. They don't fit in 50% of the areas that a crevice tool is useful for. Also they hiss obnoxiously cause of awkward design. I'm not a fan of any manufacturers combo upholstery and dusting brushes. I want the two separate, so that the upholstery nozzle actually has a reasonable size, shape and its own bristles, rubber fingers or other means of grabbing dirt and pet hair.
4. Original Windtunnel power nozzle cleans terrific but is a cheap design thanks to Maytag. All 4 wheels are lousy on it and headlight supports extend into air passage duct interfering with airflow.

Now with Eurekas. According to Eureka.com, for the past several months they have 0, Zero, Zilch, No choices whatsoever for a power head canister that is bagged!!!! In general Eureka vacuums have gone WAYYYY down in quality. There only decent vac is the Boss Smartvac upright and Boss 1934A, and I wouldn't be surprised if they ruin those soon. Everything else really suffers from clogging, terribly unsealed designs and overall bad quality. I have yet to see a regular vacuum shop that carries Eureka products on the floor with exception to its commercial lines.

I debated getting one of the Eureka SurfaceMax bagged canisters that were at BigLots for $99 not long ago. However cheap plastic wands, very flimsy bag door, small bag, flimsy wand disconnect, non swivel hose and a few other things turned me away quick even at only $100. I won't spend that kind of money for a machine that might last 2 years. At least the lime green or orange Kenmores might last 5 years at around $150 for those. Those motors are said to be very unreliable at this point!!

You really need to try something out in a store first hand, if not owning it yourself or using elsewhere for a reasonable amount of time before just going and recommending something. Just looking at it on a website or WalMart shelf should not put someone in a position to recommend a product. You should have user tested experience!!

The only experiences I have are with my 1995 Kenmore Whispertone bagged PN canister in white which has been gone since 2004. Hoover Dimension 1000 PN canister which I still have. Eureka Express PN canister which I still have. I based my recommendations on the positive experiences of the Eureka/Hoover/Kenmore. I am sorry if I annoyed you.

Just buy the tried and true red Panasonic 902. It's got a universal end on the hose that will allow you to buy a variety of additional tools to suit your needs. It has received very good results in all categories of Consumer Reports tests and is a "recommended" buy. It's a better quality version of the Kenmore Progressive and is inexpensive enough for you to buy a Hoover Linx Platinum cordless handvac which has a rotating brush for stairs and upholstery and cars. The newer Pet Version has some nice attachments as well which are designed to remove pet hair. Problem solved!
