I couldn't resist this one, for 99p plus £12 postage, well, wouldn't you?

It needs work on the electricals going by what the seller describes as "can't get it to work", but I have a boxful of junior parts, including a couple of motors (untested) and some motor brushes, and I love stripping things down to nothing and rebuilding them...

I think it's a 1334, not sure if it's a metal based or plastic based version, but judging by the picture it's most likely the plastic one...

So, yeah, I'm not a Hoover fan, but, I do have a soft spot for the Juniors, ever since I saved a pair of them from building rubble....

Well I resisted it, but then I already have one.

Yes, it is a 1334 and a metal bodied one at that. For once the advertising hype is true the Hoover Junior really must have been the most popular upright cleaner in the Uk for even this one, which must be 49 years old at the very least, is by no means rare although often they are not in this condition which is not bad. Shame it does not have the original bag, but they are getting more and more rare and in all fairness I am sure they were not designed with a life of 50 years in mind. These old girls just go on and on and, with a little attention, can often perform as well as when new.

My Juniors always perform better than original, cos I like to tinker with them, mainly the brush strips (replacing those with trimmed VibraGroomerII strips) and the disposable bags (Micro-lined generic bags, current lot from an electrolux widetrack something or other)...

The two juniors I have here at the moment, one a 1346 (dismantled now), the other unknown (after-market 1334-esque hood, no serial or model label), are kitted out like that, the 1346 even had a Kirby filltube and a trouser leg bag at one point (all experimental, but mostly mental), but the U1104 I had I just left as stock...

I have a feeling I may need to go order a front bearing, each of the juniors I have owned has needed new front bearings, and the only one I have in the box of parts is shot, but we'll see, need to work out the cause of the "not working" fault second, cos the first thing to do is to actually get it...

Still, it's a project, I just like getting my hands dirty and fixing up things like that, I like the satisfaction of getting things working that were otherwise seen as junk, or "too old", or not fashionable or some other ridiculously lazy-attitude excuse...

Erm, the Hoover Junior seems to have morphed into an Electrolux 500, I'm not averse to owning one, but, it's not what I paid for.... :S

Is it in good condition? It looked like the hood might have yellowed - its worth keeping too, they are good cleaners

It's in pretty good condition, the plastics are very smooth with very little yellowing, hardly a nick on it, but, the bumper's pretty perished, the bag chanmber smells terrible (not as bad as the HooVax though!!! Yuck!!) and I can't seem to make it run, so it may have some electrical issues, and needs good a washing out...

As for the Junior, well, seems I'm getting that too, cos I decided to keep the Lux, and arrange with the seller to have the Junior sent (and advised how to reduce it's volume to pack it), so fingers crossed...

So, yeah, three vacuums in one go, they're like buses, wait for one and three come all at once...

Well, the Junior's in the post, and the seller's letting me have it for £9, so, yeah, interesting arrangement all round, 2 older vacuums, both good projects, and all for very little money really...

Well, it's here and it works perfectly!!! No dodgy bearings, no weird noises, the only thing wrong with it was the wiring in the plug, looked like the thing had a BS546 roundpin plug originally, cos the wires were equal length, and the Neutral had come loose, but a new plug and a 3 amp fuse and all was working great...

Just washing the bag cost it had the usual cake of spilled dirt from previous bag changes, not the original as someone said here, but it works fine...

And, the best bit, it is ALL METAL!!!! I love all metal vacs, less bouncing about on less than smooth floors, and not to mention they last a lot longer than plastic vacuums do...

Just a neat little thing I have noticed, the power switch is not the usual "Rolo" style button, but is instead basically a little pedal, which I think looks better than the Rolo buttons as used on later juniors before the U1036 replaced the older style and combined the power switch into the handle release (stupid idea if you ask me!!!)...

Oh, forgot to mention that I swapped the belt cover plate with the one off my 1334-esque Junior, cos the one this 1334 came with was horrible, someone had painted it, badly, and it was peeled, scratched and faded, so lazyness ensued and I just did a like-for-like swap on the things...

It's amazing what a washed bag can do for the looks, although the colours are a mismatch, the bag is a lot brighter now it's been hand washed and dried carefully, not had a chance to refit it just yet, my bedroom's a bombsite after some rearranging and removal of useless furniture, but when I'm done I'll have more room to play...

I like this Junior, I've done very little to it to make it a runner, I've yet to crack open the motor to extract the dirt clumps that seem to form in these motors (Hoovers are great at picking up dirt, they just have a problem with where they actually put it!!), but I'll get round to it soon enough...

Well, stripped the motor down, cleaned up and lubed the rear bearing up with oil, de-fluffed the motor, cleaned out most of the dust, and swapped the 9 blade fan for a 7 blade fan, cos the 7 blade doesn't spit things out as much as the 9 blade does...

I'm sure the bag has shrunk though, the spring holding it up looks stretched out a bit longer than it should compared to the pic up at the top there, but I'm sure it'll be fine...
