I Robot Vacuum

Greetings from Palm Springs. Well I never thought I would entertain the idea of having a robot vacuum. I thought that they just couldn’t clean as well as a regular vacuum. When in Omaha for Thanksgiving Greg Nunn just had to have one and picked it up at Nebraska Furniture Mart. And I became a convert. I clean my own house now and regular vacuuming is necessary here in the desert with a lot of sandy dust. I have downsized my extensive collection to some of the best vacuums known to mankind including a MD Silentmaster 30amp central vac. I regularly use a beautiful Kirby Classic III with hepa bag and a Filter Queen 31 bought new from Ruth Hollander for deep cleaning.

The advantages of the robot vacuum is that it sets out everyday on schedule and vacuums the House with no intervention. It gets under the furniture where I don’t vacuum regularly and I am amazed at the amount of dirt it gets as I have to empty it every day. I wouldn’t use this as an “only vacuum”, but as an adjunct to a team of vacuums, I can highly recommend it.

I have a roomba too, again it would never be my only vac but it does a lovely job of keeping the house tidy, with all our animals and the two teenager animals too this place needs constant cleaning. Mine is getting old already, I have already replaced the brush drive box once and spares are a issue here in South Africa as although they are sold here their is no back up support, so if you need more intricate parts than the brushes you have to import. Its given me very good service, 7 or 8 years if i am not mistaken so I cannot complain.

I am seriously considering getting the dyson one when it launches here

I had one of those I got from goodwill, 1st gen model for $50. It was more a toy to me than a vacuum. It would always get high-centered and stuck somewhere. If your house has a Japanese style with very little furniture I'm sure they work well, but these vacuums are completely worthless in a house with a lot of obstructions.

Roomba 790

I’ve had several Roombas. I often forgot to empty them and never cleaned them out. Maybe that’s why my first two burnt out the brush rolls motor and fans and just craped out. My current Roomba is a 790. Because it came with all the maintenance parts and had a “bin full” light, I thought it was silly to not take care of it. I did repair my first two but eventually forgot to clean them again and they quit. I love this Roomba and it’s great for guinea pigs. I have a neato I got as a gift after replacing the brush mechanism on my last Roomba (I already rebuilt the gearbox once). It was waaaay better than my Roomba, more gentle. I cleaned that out fairly often until after it was a year old it just started to fail. I called neato lots of times and they fixed it until my warranty ran out and they basically told me I’m screwed and that it needed a $80 repair! I said forget it and rebuilt it myself. Worst idea EVER! It was hell to work on and I said never again. Then my neighbor got one. I told him good luck because its performance expires with the warranty. Needless to say it sometimes works but I went back to my Roombas. It’s almost been three years since I got it so I don’t use it anymore.

Personally I prefer the Neato or iclebo/Miele

I have a Roomba 960 in and I'm rather disappointed in it.

We love ours!!
We have Roomba and Miele robots. I'm not a big fan of the Miele but it's ok. We have so much dog hair that it's a must to let them run all over in between daily vacuuming. Now that my hair is long however it is a pain in the ass. I have to cut my hair out of it everyday or the brushes run slower.

I believe that they can help with daily cleaning upkeep, but I just can't justify the high price tag for it for no better cleaning than it provides. I have no animals in my home and no shoes are worn indoors. My home doesn't require daily cleaning. I prefer once or twice weekly cleaning with a full-sized cleaner. Still they are fun to watch.

I like the square head design on the Samsung shown above. That does seem like a closer counterpart to the full sized vacuums. I've often wondered why nearly all the robotic machines choose round designs when most rooms and walls aren't round.
