Window AC's!

I'd love to collect those, I do live in Alabama after all, but the only problem I have is finding them. I have searched Craigslist, ebay, thrift stores, and all sorts of places. This Tuesday, I'm going to the Goodwill Appliance Auction for the first time. Perhaps I'll find some cool (hehe cool) stuff there.

Again, people will collect anything.Window AC's is interesting-but hope you have LOTS of space and power to run them. And no doubt you will need HVAC knoweledge to fix ones that don't work-and have to deal with replacing refigerents NLA.I so remember a Fedders older round vent unit in the TV room at our house in Florida.Looked like it must of been from the fifties. Was sort of green color. After working in the yard or mowing it standing in front of the thing was so refreshing! The other alternative was jumpiong into the pool.the house had one at the time us kids took care of it!This was in the mid 60's that was my favorite house we lived in!Large old place with room for everyone. The only AC'ed rooms were the master badroom and the TV room.

The window AC units are sort of rare, here too.Guess when the old one dies or no longer works folks will dump the old one and replace it with one of those Chinese made things.I liked the old ones! They got truely cool enough to form icecycles on your nose!

The old ones

Used R-12 and R-22 refrigerant. That stuff was so awesome. It was so much colder than 134A. The EPA banned it because it hurts the environment or something. The only problem I can see with collecting A/C's would be trying to find new R-12 and R-22 to put in them!

R12 is a greenhouse gas

The EPA banned R12 refrigerant because it's an ozone-killing greenhouse gas. I know that older car and home central air conditioners can be converted to R134a. You can actually get the automotive conversion kits off the shelf at Walmart. I have no idea whether similar kits are available for window units.

R-22 in a modern unit?

Wow! I thought they used all 134A and all the other new ones. I had no idea that R-22 was still in use. That's awesome! Where can you get it?

R-22 is being phased out. Each year they limit production until it's zero. They have drop in replacements for all refrigerants that are as good if not more efficient than the originals. On units made before 1995 you will have to replace the oil in the compressors or you risk premature burn out. The newer refrigerants tend to run hotter discharge temperatures than " freon" so synthetic oils are used. By trade I'm a commercial refrigeration mechanic . ❄️💨⛄
