I have made my peace with James Dyson..........for now

Well I have given in and decided to try a new Dyson after seeing a 2015 DC40 for £185. I would have prefered the animal version, but it was not on offer and as far as I can tell, the only difference is the lack of the mini turbine head.

First impressions are good. Far quieter than any other Dyson I have owned, comfortable to use, good performance even on my kitchen floor that the DC24 and 25 couldn't cope with.

It is very early days, but this may be a Dyson I keep beyond a few months.

The first picture shows the muck removed from a small section of my living room carpet which includes a lot of fine dust and grit particles.

Aside from potential build quality and leaking issues that have plagued Dyson since day 1, I have to say, the newer machines are really improving the performance. That new brushroll and cleaner head really do make the world of difference. The crappy brushroll's always were the biggest let down on Dyson cleaners, so it's certainly nice to see it FINALLY being addressed.


 


I'd easilly go for a DC40 or a 41 or Cinnetic. I like the size of the 40. It's not too big but not as small and pathetic as the 24 or the 50.

Excellent I'm really pleased to hear it. I found the ball a bit stiff at first but it loosened up after a week or 2.

Roger, did you notice James Dyson holding one of HIS balls, on the box? Very smug looking as usual.

Regarding the "ball" mine seemed a bit stiff at first but it loosed up after a few days of rolling about.

I really do like the DC40, looking at yours Roger, it makes me wish mine was shiny new again. A "fresh" one, although, despite that icing sugar test I did with mine, it still very clean (after cleaning it of course.

I make some comment about James in the unboxing video. I think I referred to him as Mr Smug.

I do have a few (several dozen) light hearted digs at Mr D during the unboxing, but after using the DC40 throughout my house, I must say, I think the rift may be healed.

Here's my first bin load which doesn't include the master bedroom and ensuite as I can hardly see any carpet in there at the moment.

That's impressive! I told you they've come a long way. What I like about it is it moves so easily across the floor no effort needed and the new lip thing on the floorhead, you can lift it up and collect larger particles. That's a good touch.

There doesn't seem to be an excessive amount of dust inside, but I only used it for regular cleaning, no very fine dust or icing sugar.

It's hard to tell from the photos, but it's pretty clean in there.

I may get my DC41 Mk2 in August. I found the DC25 hose to be a little short and even the size of the DC25to be small in my home even though a bigger machine like a DC07 is nicer.

Dyson have always been good. The brush bars only let them down.

That's wat I found and I've been using mine for 4 months. The cyclones work well. You will notice the filter stays clean for a long period of time.

Dyson's have not always been good Tayyab, They have been LOUD and not picked up very well.

The newest Dyson's are the best yet. But, they are flimsy and very expensive.

That said, I do love my DC40.

The one thing I wish they would fix if they want to better their product in the future, is make the DAM cyclone bins scratch resistant!! They make the whole machine look dingy when the pin is sand blasted, I sped up the scratching with my bin from picking up granulated sugar, the first week I had it for that agitation test, oops. They do go dull over time though.

I agree about the bin should be scratch resistant and yes they are over priced! As for the plastic it may feel flimsy but it is still robust. A riot shield is flexible for a reason. To absorb the impact. It is the flexibility that makes it strong.

I agree they are durable but I want it to FEEL durable when I use it, I don't like how it flexes when you steer it, to be honest, that could also be due to the handles design rather than the plastic itself.

I wonder if Dyson would send me a new bin if I asked them nicely, lol, it would make mine look new again.

Looks very nice! That new brushbar looks like it's worlds better. How do you like the wand and tools?

I have only used the tools briefly on my stairs and cleaning a blind with the soft dusting brush that I still had from when I owned a Dyson before. The hose is just a bit short to reach comfortably to the top of the stairs, even with the wand attached and I found cleaning my blind a bit tiring as the hose feels heavy when using it for dusting. Saying that, I tend to use a suction cleaner for above the floor, so I may look at a Dyson cylinder next.

Dyson have always been good, not excellent but good. The DC01 was okay for their first vacuum and the 03 better features wise. Then the DC07 improved the DC04, etc etc
I would say the loud a Dysons are the DC08, DC03, YDK DC01, DC07 late models and the DC33.
My DC14 Animal is alright noise level wise, some reason.

The DC01, DC02 and DC03 are DREADFUL they have hardly any suction at all at the cleaner head and the hose suction is poor for a clean fan.

I don't care if the DC01 was his first it is still awful, it don't have enough suction even a contour had more at the time, all he had to do was use a more powerful motor and it may of been okay.

The DC02 was just a pathetic excuse for a cylinder.

The DC03 was a nice design but again, it lacked in power, if it had of been as powerful as the DC04 it would of been half decent.

The hose on the DC41 will reach up the stairs. It is a bit springy but it does loosen up in time.
Anyway £185 you got a very good deal there Roger. I paid £320 for my DC41.:-0

The success of those cleaners was only as a result of clever marketing and not a high performing product. Dyson cleverly fooled people into thinking the machine picked up more because you could see the dirt being spun around in a cyclone, but it didn't. Every single cleaner on the market at the time would've out-performed those 3. Even a £60 Goblin Laser has stronger suction at the cleaner head and a better brushroll.


 


The DC04 and DC05 however, were a VAST improvement and to this day are my favourite Dysons of the lot.

Chris, I think the DC04 was one of the better Dyson's, you try and find a DC04 or DC05 with a clogged cyclone, lol.

They had very good suction but again, they tended to whine down the ears.

Haha yes. It's not a bad price though if you get many years use out of it.

I would like the new carbon fibre dusting brush and they now have an under appliance tool similar to Shark in the US. Hope it's available here soon.
