Hi all, I just brought home a Hyla NST from Goodwill for the usual $15.09. It came with the water basin, motor, power hose, power nozzle, wet hose, and some sort of extractor thing with a clear tube on it. I filled it up with water and used the power nozzle, it picks up good, sounds good, with no abnormal noises. BUT, there is one big problem- It REEKS of wet, stinky dog. If you turn it on at all it emits a PUTRID odor. I will go to my local vac shop this afternoon to look for a new filter for it. Any ideas of how to get rid of the DISGUSTING smell? Any tips, or advice are welcome. Also, the manufacture date says 160409, I don't know if that means September 16, 2004 or April, 16 2009.

The Hyla only uses water as a filter. Because water filtration vacuums force the evaporation of the water in their basin very quickly (about 2 pints per hour), the dirt in the pan is also forced to evaporate and ends up in the motor's suction fans. What you'll need to do is remove the separator, and clean it. Remove the motor (start be removing the handle decal that says "hyla", the screws for the top cover are underneath), and remove the fan and wash that. When reassembled, use fabric softener (a few drops) in the water, and the returning air stream will smell like wash day, not like dogs.
I got it cleaned out, and the stink has been greatly reduced,
but I still can't figure out the manufacture date-160409. I am pretty sure that would be April 16, 2009. I heard that this vacuum was designed by someone who worked for Rainbow, but got mad at them, and went to Germany and designed another vacuum. Is this true?
