Just got a Kirby d80 - fired it up and it suddenly filled the room with a strong "dog" smell. I emptied the emptor (which didn't smell bad), but does anyone have a good suggestion for eliminating that smell other than replacing the bag. Machine wash, line dry?

just a suggestion....

When I hang out at the Vacuums & More store, I watch what they do to learn as much as I can. When they work on any vacuum just before they are finished with it they use this spray on the cloth bag, spray and wipe dry the bag chamber or spray it on a throw rug and run the vacuum over it.

Its called "Majestic Carpet Solutions Triple action Multi-Enzyme spotter deoderizer protector." Removes spots and stains on almost anything. It contains DuPont Zonyl-spot and stain protector. And it smells good too, clean and fresh.

I have taken it and put it on a rag, wiped down the dirt chamber in an electrolux then left the rag in it, leave the chamber open and turn on the Electrolux, pushing the bag button on the back of the lid. It makes the vacuum smell clean!  It gets rid of pet oders in a vacuum.

Its expensive, but this bottle so far has lasted me a year. It doesn't take much of it.  Plus its good on carpet stains and odors!

Kirby bags can be removed from the emptor and washed. First shake out as much dirt and dust as you can. Remove the bag topper. Wash by itself, don't run it with ladies unmentionables or similar or that could get you in big trouble. If the bag is really old and rotten, it could fall apart in the wash but if that's the case, it probably is shot anyway.

What I did was

Took the bag off and hand washed it in a bucket with a product called Bioclean then let it line dry. I also put a small packet of something called "fresh wave" in the emptor that a guy at local vac shop recommended. Ran it tonight and didn't notice a smell!
