I can't figure out how to remove the levers from the unit. The metal stems go into these plastic pieces but I can't get them to pop out. I've pulled but don't want to break anything.

99% sure they simply slide on. However, it's likely the metal is slightly barbed to prevent them from just wiggling off.

Provided no locking mechanism is visible (or feel-able) anywhere around the handle part that the stem goes into (like a set screw or a locking tab that latches onto the metal stem), just pull straight with even force around the handle, and give it a slight wiggle up and down as you pull. They should just pop off.

You were right. I was on the right track, but your advice kind of convinced me to keep at it. I had to pull really really hard to get them off, but they eventually came out.

This helped me get the top off. I used the blower port on my Eureka Mighty Mite to blow any remaining small crumbs out. There were old toaster pastry crust shells in there too that still looked fresh. Makes you wonder what they put in them for preservative. Now that I've thoroughly grossed everyone out. lol
