I'm definitely a fan of upright cleaners for general floor cleaning. The brushing action is great for pet hair and they're much quicker and easier than a cylinder (no dragging along behind getting stuck on door frames etc).

However, I hate using the hose on uprights. Continually fighting the stretch is a pain. I'm therefore looking for a very compact cylinder or a portable cleaner with proper small tools (no combo tools) for use on furniture, stairs and difficult to reach areas. It must be mains powered too.

Any suggestions?

Why no combo tool? I presume you mean those awful crevice/dusting brush efforts?

The electrolux butterfly tool is the best your ever likely to use for dusting and upholstery/stairs.

Even some (most) seperate tools dont work as well as this tool so I would suggest a cleaner that can accept this size fitting and you buy the tool seperately.

Perhaps consider looking for a vintage Electrolux compact like a 150 series, they comeup frequently on ebay and really do the biz.

Failing this your probably looking at something like the Oreck mini cylinder which aint too shoddy but come at a fair price.

Just be mindful youmight find the cylinder you want at the right price but you may have to buy aftermarket tools/convertors to fit your needs.

SamI was going to mention the Portapower but I never felt they were built for the job.

God awful noise they make, feels like the noise they make is to prove they are something they are not. Suction isnt too great for the size it is although it seems to be adequate but its major let down is it restricts you into using Hoover 'pip' tools and while the crevice and dusting brush are ok (not a patch on Lux though) the upholstery tool is lacklustre and awkward to use.

SEBO's K1 is great - the standard red model comes with a 1.8 metre hose whilst the K1 Komfort or Pet model comes with 2.1 metres longer hose as standard. Yeah it has a slide on upholstery tool on the crevice but the Pet model comes with a mini stair turbo brush, great for carpeting.

However, if you want to keep your costs low, as above as to what TM suggests.

The recent listing for the 1990s Hoover Telios on Ebay UK from another thread would suffice.

Wilko sell the Butterfly dust combo tool and there's a 35mm adaptor for use with Miele or Bosch vacuums - very handy! They also sell the Electrolux based risor visor stair brush turbo brush.

I have just ordered a vax air powerhead. Its a vax air cylinder with a motorized power head. Looks like it comes with an array of tools. I think it is similar to the hoover windtunnel air canister in the US. I don't know what these machines are like or how good the motor head is. It 150 exclusive at vax website. I wanted something powerful for doing the stairs and car with as I have two flights of stairs and 3 cars to clean and the sebo felix isn't the best for tools.
