Something unique about the Hoover Type A bag is that it spans several vastly different vacuums. Convertibles, Guardsmans, Conquests, Concepts, Powermax, Elites, Legaies, Runabouts, etc. The list goes on.

Just for fun: Which vacuums do you have that take Type A bags? What is your favorite Hoover which uses them?

I currently have 3 vacuums which require type A bags. My U3317 Hoover Concept I, my Hoover C1403, and my Kenmore High Performance "Kenvertible." I use the synthetic HEPA ones.

My ultimate favorite, though, is not one I own. It's the Hoover Legacy, soft bagged, in the charcoal color.

On a side note, aren't Type Y and Type Z bags virtually the same as Type A bags, just shorter? How do they differ?

Don't forget the Hoover B style. It also is basically an A bag used on the Oreck/Tacony knock off called the clean and light and I believe the Sovereign as well.

Here's a fun thought. What other band of vacuums can you think of that will use Hoover A bags.
Kenmore power center, royal metal upright, Singer/Bissell uprights of the 90's and more.

I have Several Convertible, Concept, Elite, powermax, and decade machines as well as Innovation, Sovereign, and runabout that take A bags.

Phillip, the Hoover B bag is the same basic size the Hoover Y bag is, BUT the collar is a little bit smaller than the Hoover A/Y/Z collar. if you try to put a Hoover A bag on a vacuum that uses the Hoover B, it will not stay on properly & cause a mess.

Hoover UK's 'H4' bags are suitable for the 'Turbopower 1', 'Turbomaster' and 'Turbolite' which was the imported USA 'Elite' in disguise.

Thus I would think that the USA bags suitable for 'Elite' would also fit the 'Sovereign' and the 'Innovation'.

One Design difference between the Hoover A&Z and the Y is that the wise for a bypass machine and typically two or three layers. The A and Z or for direct air machines.
I do use a HEPA Y bag on my concept one you just need to be careful that you don't feel it too much being that it's a smaller bag.
A good gym to find is that there were Hoover HEPA A bags made by Tacony in the mid-2000s

HEPA Y Bags for Hoover Concept

When I bought my Concept Two U3309 from the thrift shop, it came with a paper Y bag installed and a pack of three empty Y bags. They seemed to me to be the wrong bags because, while the collar fit, the paper bags were shorter than the zippered fabric. So I bought and now use Type A bags for it.

Since I already had some type Y bags, I found a Hoover Windtunnel U6485-900 in another thrift shop to use them with.

Next trip back to the first shop, I found and bought a pack of Hoover type Y HEPA bags and was stunned to see that the package says it's for Concept One and Concept Two. Did Hoover not make a HEPA A, and instead label their HEPA Y for use in a taller environment?

The Y bag is much shorter than the A, so the Y hangs suspended by its collar in a Concept instead of resting on its bottom.

Straight from Hoover ...

p.s., Yes, there is a green paper Y bag that I stuffed in with the white HEPA Y bags after I opened the package. Now all my Y bags are stored together.
