Picked this up on Sunday! I remember them when they were new but have never actually used one! Is a very interesting machine based on the quick play I;ve had (got a DC04 which went first into the refurb pile as I will sell it)

The motor is VERY LOUD! Gives an aquavac a run for its money! Suction from the tools is mediocre, but both foam filters are very dusty. Despite this however it grooms really well and did pull a massive chunk of rubbish out of our rugs, despite them being frequently turbopowered!

Is missing the dusting brush sadly, and has the horrible purepower tools with the crevice tool attachment thing inside of them. Yet to pull it apart at all but it's a funky little thing.

Does have rear wheel issues though, they wobble around so when I push it on the rear wheels it does a little fat man shuffle from side to side!

Will kick the decent photos off when I get started!

Both my early Purepowers and my Vortex do that wobble thing :p The introduced that crevice tool slot in the upholstery and dusting tool on the Turbopower 2 cleaners. :)
Nice find :)

Cheers!

Found a broken bit already, will glue up nicely though!

Is it 1999 or 2000? Cant remember which block of numbers to look at on the candy stickers!

Filter was a bit chokka though

From Hoover Vortex

Hoovered it out with a compact and it was slightly better

Will wash it well when I refurb the machine. Very annoyed actually as I had a NOS HEPA filter for one of these, which I binned when I cleared out the garage as I didnt think I'd ever have one...grrr Dont bin anything you may think you never need...

The whole things choked with dust. Suction is a bit better but I think its pretty poor still

However it works pretty well. Bloody loud though!

I'm not a convert though, not when I can do this with one of these...

Was that the post motor filter Beko? Its no wonder the motor is noisy if all that dust passed through it. Dont they have an effective pre-motor filter in these?

Nice find, there was one of these on my carboot as well, but it was dirty & had a few bits missing.

It's from the 27th week of 1999, BTW.

I've seen them lol - on ALex'es - you have to take the top off the side air duct and its just in there - a very small, coarse filter that lets all the dust pass through into the motor. VERY bad design, and not good for the motor or its bearings.

You think "ooh its under the button..." Its not a button... Pull the cap off, and theres an orange filter housing underneath. Ah, nice long filter that goes under the bulge...

No, the unwell looking bit of foam is it. Will replace it with something better I think!

Still, its not a very good idea to have all the dust pass through the motor though, and the exhaust filter to do the main filtering. They probably did this deliberately to shorten the motor life. Planned obsolescence again by design.

I think that..

That filter was just to stop the larger particles of hair and fluff entering the motor. However, I'm sure with the large ducting down the side of the machine that hoover could of used a bigger and better standard filter in there.

I imagine you are right Steve. The selling point of this machine over a Dyson was no filter replacement. I think i remember the advertising made the cyclone sound that efficient, rather than the fact its filters are washable.

I always found airflow through these machines to be lacking, as the exhaust on the small inner cyclone is tiny. The motor always sounds under pressure. And yours sounds full of dust! :P I remember family who had these would remember to wash filters, but forget about the hidden shroud.

I knew a woman who would only wash the filters once the motor had blown, so she didn't have to pay for the repair. Why? Who knows.

I have never found a vacuum with that chassis (purpepower, dustmanager) that rolls across a hard floor smoothly. It makes vacuuming a hard floor really irritating.

My grandma owned the hard box/ cord rewind version of the turbopower above. Lots of nostalgia attached to their hum.

Always enjoy your refurb threads Sam :)

Good luck, and don't F*** it up. ( I need to stop watching so much Rupaul)

The one that was original to it had fluff and hairs embedded inside it. I bought is a brandnew one for a fiver and was surprised that it was genuine when it arrived.

Stripped it!

Got a DC04 washed, and sat down with the Vortex

Annoyingly one bearing wont come off the shaft, so I'll have to re-grease it in situ. One of the end caps wouldnt come off either so I left it on

I then tried to work out how to remove the bottom chassis. Then it fell apart...

Dip in brake cleaner and new grease will see this one right, they make dood non clutched dyson brushroll bearings

And done! Awaiting washing now. I'm more impressed with the Vortex now I've seen how it works! Confident that I can dial out the issues it has!

More soon!

Trying to figure out how the 'triple vortex' works

Looking at that cyclone assembly, I see a shroud and a (small!) cyclone, but what's with all the extra and strange ducting around the cyclone? I know Hoover was trying to get around Dyson's patents, and built an extra step into their separation apparatus. Does anyone know how the triple vortex system works?

I think it is like the Dual Cyclone, the only difference being that sort that exhausts the central cyclone is redirected to go through that stage again.

I may if read somewhere about it being a similar design to some sort of oil filter?

It works pretty well :)

I wish it would come apart as I was intrigued as to what the hell it was! Anyone got a spare unit and a bandsaw?

It almost seems like they redesigned it just to get around Dyson without much thought to the performance, I always thought right angles were a no-no in airflow terms? For my girlfriends car the best way to get another few BHP out of it is to chop a bit of the air box out to straighten the airflow out!

It's an odd machine this, some parts are impressive, and you can see the thought go into it, others are almsot as if the engineers went 'Shit lads, we havent/cant do/done this... whats a quick way to sort it (ala the diy overflow plumbing parts...)

Be interested to see how it performs when back together. Will do a head to head with the DC04, which has an IDENTICAL motor in!

The Only Hoover Triple Vortex

in the United States. It's incredibly loud and a terrible vacuum at deep cleaning. I've had this one for 14 years now.

dysonman1-2014060409102308784_1.jpg

It is not THAT loud, Tom but it was STUPIDLY better than the DC01!! in every way possible, better suction, better brushroll, easier to use and convenient tools...cord rewind on certain Vortex models, lifetime filters, it was a better answer to a Dyson at the time. But Dyson sued due to patents that Dyson had...I personally think James was annoyed Hoover made a better cleaner than he did.
