The one that was original to it had fluff and hairs embedded inside it. I bought is a brandnew one for a fiver and was surprised that it was genuine when it arrived.
2x NOS Hoover bearings to replace the crap ones in it. Will refurb the black ringed one but whilst it was out like this I wasnt going to cut corners! Bearings were obtained from stores in the 80's apparently!
Dip in brake cleaner and new grease will see this one right, they make dood non clutched dyson brushroll bearings
Trying to figure out how the 'triple vortex' works
Looking at that cyclone assembly, I see a shroud and a (small!) cyclone, but what's with all the extra and strange ducting around the cyclone? I know Hoover was trying to get around Dyson's patents, and built an extra step into their separation apparatus. Does anyone know how the triple vortex system works?
I think it is like the Dual Cyclone, the only difference being that sort that exhausts the central cyclone is redirected to go through that stage again.
I may if read somewhere about it being a similar design to some sort of oil filter?
I wish it would come apart as I was intrigued as to what the hell it was! Anyone got a spare unit and a bandsaw?
It almost seems like they redesigned it just to get around Dyson without much thought to the performance, I always thought right angles were a no-no in airflow terms? For my girlfriends car the best way to get another few BHP out of it is to chop a bit of the air box out to straighten the airflow out!
It's an odd machine this, some parts are impressive, and you can see the thought go into it, others are almsot as if the engineers went 'Shit lads, we havent/cant do/done this... whats a quick way to sort it (ala the diy overflow plumbing parts...)
Be interested to see how it performs when back together. Will do a head to head with the DC04, which has an IDENTICAL motor in!
It is not THAT loud, Tom but it was STUPIDLY better than the DC01!! in every way possible, better suction, better brushroll, easier to use and convenient tools...cord rewind on certain Vortex models, lifetime filters, it was a better answer to a Dyson at the time. But Dyson sued due to patents that Dyson had...I personally think James was annoyed Hoover made a better cleaner than he did.
... does the Vortex V2001 - red & black with S class filtration - have the original style cyclone unit that Dyson sued Hoover over, or is it the newer but less efficient style?
Just asking as I have won one of eBay, and I'm looking forward to it, as many positive things have been said about it, including it beating a DC01 performance wise.
Just slightly worried that I may have payed a tad much for it, but judging by the pictures it looks ok.
If it says on the V2001 "Triple vortex system" then yes it will and I imagine it will have the efficient cyclone in it and not the later "Hurricane" style low efficiency cyclone.
... glad to know that it's the earlier style one. What makes the filters different compared to the regular V2000, do they have a similar style filter to the S-class PurePower's?
I find it quite hard to believe that the DC01 is less easier to use than a hoover triple vortex, the vac has a simple design really. 3 screws for a belt change, 2 rubber flaps under the back, a pullout filter, and a lift up post motor filter lid to see the filter and check it, just 1 button and the wand comes out, etc. I like the hoover though
PS That refurbishment looks great Sam! hope it works much better afterwards

Well, whilst I enjoyed playing about the DC01 when I had it, I was annoyed that the floor head had that adjusting pivot. Failed to get under beds too and was a major pain in the rear for maintaining carpet contact properly unless you constantly lower your back out via the handle.
I note the Vortex has manual height adjustment - so in theory, it should be better to control from the owner.
