Hoover Vortex V2000

The 'Triple Vortex' models were the superior line, 'Whirlwind' was an entry range.

There was also Hoover 'Cyclone' (in yellow, I think). One model of Hoover (possibly the 'Cyclone' could take clear plastic polythene 'hoover bags', as hygienic liners.

After the Dyson court palaver, the 'Vortex Power' range was launched, suction power similar to Dyson DC04.

Dyson then launched DC07 @ 330 air watts.

Hoover retaliated with 'Hurricane' @ 350 air watts (at hose end, when empty!)

i really like your collection..very nice . as i dislike bagless vacs, but yours are a standout. i love that brushroll...are those beater bars..circular along the lengh? how do those differ from the ones on a VG2...

I believe Hoover called the beater bars beater pads and were first seen in Hoover's Turbopower range introduced in 1982/3. Hoover called it an 'activator' and claimed it reactivated the fibres of the carpet, which it did, very well. I'm sure other members will agree with me that the activator brushroll was the best all plastic hoover brushroll design. The brushrolls on current Hoover uprights don't feature beater bars at all and do not do as good a job. The performance of Hoover's dire Purepower would be greatly improved if the activator was fitted instead of the soft brush brushroll.

I will be adding some pictures of my Turbopower 2 shortly, that features the same activator, with excellent edge cleaning due to the extra long side brushes.

'Activator' agitator

Definately the best of the plastic agitators, but only when fitted in late Junior U1104, Turbopowers, Turbomasters, Purepowers and Vortex machines.

There was a wimpy little version of the activator fitted to the 'Turbo 500' power nozzle, that fitted Sensotronic and Compact cylinder models. It never seemed to have the same "reactivating" power as the upright versions.

Suddenly remembered...!

The model of upright cyclonic cleaner, based on the V2000 design mould, which took the polythene hygienic bags was known as the 'Cyclean'. I think that machine was a blue colour.

Calum

I had a few models with the Turbo 300 head. I think it was called Turbo 300, not 500. 300 because it was 300mm wide.
It was the best power nozzle Hoover made, better than the Electro Kinetic head fitted to the early Sensotronic and Compact Total System.

My favourite cleaner with the Turbo 300 head was the Hoover Sensotronic Total System 400. I also had the Total System 500, but the power hose on the remote models had a fault that would cut power if you yanked the hose quickly. This happened on my Audio System 300 too. Because the Sensotronic System 400 had the controls on the cleaner, it didn't suffer from this problem.

It's a shame that most UK manufacturers don't offer power heads as an option. Sebo, Numatic and Miele are the only ones I can think of, though Miele have discontinued the Revolutions.
Oh yes, there's the Dyson Motorhead.

You're probably right about my error, it was some time ago now.

The Turbo head was also available for Hoover 'Alpina' cylinder cleaners too.

I had the 'Alpina Tria 3', a Currys exclusive model with remote control on the power hose, and a power take-off socket on the handgrip for the power head.

My model had a habit of misreading the power +/- signal and would suddenly surge with power when you tried to lower the power. There was no automatic setting, but there was a 'Boost for a few seconds' button.

I found the hose incredibly heavy and awkward to work with, so I sold it on.

When I first bought the cleaner and unpacked it, the 'glamour' disc on one of the wheels promptly fell off. It had never been properly fitted.

Alpina

Calum,

I had the Alpina Tria and remember using it with the Turbo 300 nozzle. I made my own tv ad for it which is something else I hope to put on YouTube.

I liked the Alpina range, but they were very heavy and far from silent as Hoover claimed with their "Power Of Silence" strapline.
I wrote to Hoover at the time to complain about the noise level of the Alpina, but never got a response.

I still have the base model.

Mine was black in colour, the control panel was just a row of LED lights, the bag check indicator was electronic.

I think the model number of my machine was something like "SC 198".
