Hoover Turbopower Total System U2798

Here is my Hoover Turbopower Total System U2798 which I picked up on Saturday just gone, mine is a later one and is one of the last of it's style and model, the Hoover U1060 replaced it in about 1997 which looked almost the same but had a 600 watt motor which made it extremely loud.

Mine is in very good condition, the eBay seller said it had only used a few times as he preferred a cylinder, so was therefore put in storage.

All it needed was a good clean, new belt, bag and brushroll bearings greasing. The motor runs perfect in it, like it is brand-new and there are no cracks on it what so ever, unlike my other Total System (U2602) and there are very few scratches on it. It was missing the crevice tool when I got it, so I nicked it from my Turbopower 2 for the photo.

Not sure why but other U2798's I have seen have the little red dots under the Hoover lettering of the bag door release, but, mine doesn't, wonder why?

For some reason the U2798 never had a lower cord hook, just this silly little cover thing. A cord hook is kind of compulsery, deer god I hope Hoover were not thinking a cord hook was a feature on the lower end models!

It also says made in the EC, I wonder if it was made in the UK, I am sure I have heard that all the Turbopower ones were made in Britain?

None of the red TP total systems had a lower cord hook. I think it was more cost cutting than making it a feature. Remember, by the time these went on sale, the Turbopower 2 was out and Hoover had begun their first attempt at phasing out the Turbopower 1 cleaners, so any unnecessary cost would've been dropped and lots of corners were cut.


 


Still, the Turbopower 1, especially the red TS model's, sold in their thousands. They were EVERYWHERE when I was younger. Infact, my irish grandparents replaced their old Junior Deluxe with this model. Despite the cut backs on this cleaner, it was still a briliant vacuum and considerably cheaper than a lot of other cleaners on the market (such as the Lux Contour which isn't half the cleaner this is!). I believe the U2798 came with the 5 year parts guaruntee too, which had been phased out completely by the time the U1060 replaced it.

But if they were cost cutting by taking away the lower cord hook then how did it really save any money? The plastic cover that goes in it's place would cost to make as well, so...I can't really see how it is saving money.

I do like this one (U2798) don't get me wrong but my true faveourite of all the Turbopower 1's has to be the U2602 Total System it is a beauty.

Like you said, the U2798 was cheaper than alot of other Hoovers at the time but they still cleaned alot better and more efficiently than other brands that were more expensive, as you said the Electrolux contour and certainly the Dyson DC01!
Hell, the suction threw the hose on the Turbopower Total Systems is ruffly the same as the DC01 Hose suction!! No joke.

What I love about the Turbopowers, is you could get the bottom of the line Turbopower Junior and the top of the line Turbpower Freedom Total System and they would still performe the same on carpets, just with a few more features that push the price up.

Agreed - the Dyson DC01 suction was a complete joke. The direct air Turbopowers were fantastic at removing grit from carpets.

It will have been cost, as mentioned. The cap in the place of the lower cord hook just snaps into place. Someone could just thump it into position by hand at any point on the assembly line. In contrast, the cord hook would have taken a lot longer, relatively speaking, requiring a person to fit the hook in place and then attach the locking spring, possibly even using a machine to attach the hook. This time would have added up considerably. It may have even needed to be completed as a sub-assembly. Taking away just this one step of the build process would have saved so much money over the life of production.

Of course, there is also the chance that the lack of cord hook might have forced a purchaser to upgrade to a higher mode, but that would have been purely a by-product of a cost-cutting exercise.

Alex, the same could be said for any vacuum range. You can't just use that reason to like the Turbopower's. Look at the Dyson DC40 - the animal retailing at £299 doesn't clean any better than the multi-floor at £359. It's always been the same. 


 


If you're looking specifically around the same time as the Turbopower, look back at it's rivals.


 


in 83, the Lux 550 and 560 and neither cleaned any better than the other, Panasonic 40 series were all the same apart from variable power and headlights added and the Lux 600 series just had variable power as the only difference.
