Hoover S3620 PowerMax Ultra needs repair

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

With Sears on shaky grounds would be leary of buying a vacuum, esp the optional extended warrantee.Go to an established vac shop instead.Yes,the Sears/Panasonic vacs are pretty good-but if Sears goes under you would have an extended warrantee you paid for but couldn't use.A vacuum store would have more machines to choose from and try out.And they could service the vacuum you buy.

Rex, Rob,

If the Hoover motor is ok, the board can be bypassed and it will run fine.
It is not a DC motor.
Kenmore Progressives are made by Panasonic, and parts and service will be around for a long time.
Any vacuum shop which sells Panasonic or services them can do that.

Just FYI, if you are looking to get a handle-grip controlled vacuum, I have a Kenmore for sale starting at $20.

Its for the motor unit only. You'd need to get the hose and other parts.  I know that probably doesn't help much, but just thought I'd mention it.

Another option is to be on the watch for vacuums similar to yours for sale.  In fact I recently sold  Hoover like yours for $25 + shipping, with a hose, but no PN.  It was even the same color, and worked fine.

Thanks to all for the advice, willingness to look at pictures, and offers of possible replacement vacuums.

I took it to one vacuum cleaner "repair" shop - which was only interested in selling me a Miela or another brand for $1,000+. Riiiiight.

I looked around a bit more and found "A-1 Vaccum Cleaner Repair and Sales", and without much hope, gave them a call. Long story short, **the guy actually does repair** and offered to look at it for free!

I left it there and will report back when I know more.

Stay tuned and thanks again.

I own the predecessor to your model!

I own a Hoover PowerMax Supreme S3611. It's essentially the same model as your PowerMax Ultra. Your machine is newer and runs on 9.3 Amps and has the black hose with all controls. My machine is 9.8 Amps and has the same controls.

If I unplug my hose wire from the suction unit, the motor turns off but the red indicator light on the suction unit stays red. What is yours doing when this wire is unplugged and the motor was running? Is your red light still lit on the suction unit?

Did the rheostat thermal shutoff turn your machine off when the issue first occured? The Reostat thermal shutoff control is the round metal piece with clip that rests in a contained space in back of housing behind the motor. Is all wiring to that decent?

Did you pull the motor out of the housing to check all wires including wires coming from hose into the suction unit? On a standard non- variable speed, non system on/off PowerMax it is a 2 prong, t shaped plug to the suction unit. With the variable speed and full machine on/off it is 3 prongs to the suction unit. So you'll have 3 wires coming from the hose lead into the motor compartment in the suction unit.

When you inspected the motor housing, did it look as if the motor has been moving and twisted various wires? I've had issues with a former PowerMax model where the motor wasn't properly installed from service and the rubber gasket wasn't locking into the plastic so as the motor was turned on, the torque turned the motor and eventually twisted and damaged some wires. I've cut the wires below the point of injury and either re-spliced or tied in a new section of comparable gauge wiring.

Many of the wires in my suction unit are snapped into the plastic shroud but some are loose and may rest up against the motor itself. I've owned PowerMax machines since 1997 and never had one where a wire went bad just from resting up against the back of the motor.

I had a Kenmore canister years back that was a standard Progressive with 3 way power switch for the entire machine on the hose handle. It had an issue where when the hose was disconnected the motor would continue to run. I believe Sears worked on the hose when they repaired it but that doesn't make much sense to me.

Do you see any burnt wires anywhere on your machine in the hose handle or main suction unit? The control board in the suction unit is attached to the plastic motor retainer that goes holds the motor into place.

If you have a question regarding wiring I can take photos of my unit and we can compare diagrams!

Possible solutions for you:

-- Fred Stachnich- HooverCelebrity on here used to service Hoovers at an actual Hoover store. Hoover had hose handles of this style starting with the Dimension 1000 so he have some experience with this and may have a solution?

There is a vac shop in upstate New York with tons of vacuums and he may have parts and also be able to help troubleshoot. It would take him some time to find that particular machine in his stock piles but I'm 99% certain he has everything that you would need. Here is his info if you're interested:

The control panel in the hose handle is part number 47551014 and is listed as available on Sears Parts website for $41.99. I've posted it in the link section below.

The board in the suction unit is attached to the motor retainer. The motor retained for your model is listed as part number 41312048 and is listed on Sears Parts as available also at $71.49. It includes all seals and a new control board.

I was surprised by both links having prices and listing them as available so that's awesome! Sears is very good at staying updated with their parts and listed them as unavailable when they get discontinued!!

Let me know if I could help further!! The S3611 that I have is my first PowerMax with the variable speed and full machine on/off. I've only had that one for a little over a year. I've never had an issue with any PowerMax/ Futura/ Windtunnel machine ever having an electrical issue and my family has/ owns SEVERAL since 1997!!

For reference I've attached photos of what this hose looks like. My S3611 machine is the green one on the right in the 3rd photo. The hose on the S3620, BB62's hose will be black in color, just as the hose color on my blue PowerMax S3603-040 the left machine in photo 3.

The vacuum repair store called - he couldn't repair the unit! :-(

I will post back next week after I pick it up, and also get some pictures to post.

Thanks for your continued posts.

Let us know when you get it back. You can contact the store in upstate New York for parts.

Did the vacuum store at least tell you where the exact problem was and what part was needed that he no longer has available?

Brando Husky

"Found one of these in green at the local goodwill today. Almost grabbed it. $10. I don't know why I didn't. Might go back for it"

I know where you can find a buyer! ;-)

I hope to pick mine (unrepaired) up tomorrow.

Yes, the store that I got both of my Hoover Celebrity's refurbed actually, probably could help. That is my buddies store in upstate New York that I mentioned.

The owners name is Chris and he is phenmomenal!! Chris is a member of this forum too: Hoover28 is his name. If anyone needs anything, I encourage you to contact him!!
The store is C.S. Vacuums in Oneida, New York.

-----Both of my Hoover Celebrity canisters were refurbed there.
----Eureka Rotomatic blue power team canister was refurbed and purchased from there
-----Hoover Widepath Breathe Easy upright was refurbed and purchased from there
-----Hoover Decade 800 was purchased from there and I serviced it at home, but since I purchased it, he sent me all of the parts that I needed for free!
-----Hoover Quadraflex powermatic nozzle was received from there for a Dimension 1000 upright
----- Previously owned Hoover Convertible Elite- teal addition was refurbed and purchased from there
----- Hoover Spectrum canister was purchased from there--- he sent me any parts that I needed for free again!

All said and done I've given lots of business because he is extremely reasonable on price, he HAS EVERYTHING pretty much and is very courteous, professional and easy to work with!!

He has a plethora of vintage and newer machines to select from to be refurbed and sold. Essentially if you have a dream vacuum in mind, tell him and he probably has it or something very very similar!!

VACERATOR

Would you give me your friend's contact info?

I had high hopes for the local store because he was an actual **repair** guy, but my vacuum had him buffaloed.

I've thought about posting pictures, but a) I don't know how to, and b) nothing's different than when it was new! :-(

Thank you all.

Jeff,

that is Rob's contact, not mine. Hoover28, in upstate NY.
I do know of a repair shop in Utica Michigan that does only repair and sell used sewing machines and vacs. Nothing new, so they will not scam you into a new one, because they don't sell any.
It's called SAV sew and vac on Van Dyke avenue, Utica, Michigan. Just do a Google map search for the phone number and address. I'm sure they will give you an over the phone assessment and advise you honestly on wether you should bother to ship it to them.
Or you can contact Chad at Arbor Vacuum in Ann Arbor. He is also a member here, but I don't know him personally. I did refer someone there who needed a Miele bag compartment cover for a robin egg blue canister from California. He wanted a used part. Hard to come by, so I suggested finding any color, then matching the paint at a painter supply store for automotive finishes, or even having an auto body shop paint it.
I know that's able to be done, because my friend who bought a Pontiac Trans Am convertible needed a black front plastic bird insert for the front license plate insert. It was an out of state car which required a front plate.

The Chad to whom you are referring is Chad Michael! I can't remember if he is on this site or not?? He probably is, I talk to him on Facebook. He is a great guy and does have a vacuum store in Ann Arbor, Michigan area!

The vacuum guy that I mentioned is:

C.S. Vacuums
Oneida, NY
Chris

He has just about everything!!!
