I got a tan HOOVER power drive upright from (I assume) the mid nineties. Problem is, the power drive only works in reverse. I have never had a power drive hoover, so I don't know how they function. When I recline the handle, and the machine is off, whether the power drive is set to on or off, the wheels stick, and don't turn normally. but will with extra force. In use, it propels in reverse, but not forward, whether the power drive is on or off. Does the power drive belt just need replacing, or what else? Thanks in advance!!

I had a similar problem with my blue one. I just messed around with the power drive mechanism under the hood, and covered it in WD40. I wasn't really thinking, just kind of did it. Now it works great.

I guess...

I will replace the power drive belt anyway, as it is sort of dry. Does it use the same power drive belt as the windtunnel s/p? If not, which one does it use?

Power Drive cable needs to be adjusted most likely. Many people would carry the vacuum by the handle with the power drive feature engaged. This would add major strain to the power drive cable causing it to pull out enough that the propulsion would only work in reverse. We did a warranty repair on that exact problem last week on a newer Hoover.

Is..

the power drive cable the little strip that runs down the outside of the motor housing? I assume that is the cable since it then connects to the power drive wheels.

Why yes it is. It is a long metal cable that extends from the handle all the way to the power drive wheels. You may want to take the handle apart to make sure that the cable isn't broken up there- that is a popular issue on these models as well.

Hoover Power drives

What I wouldn't give to get my hands on another Hoover Power Drive. I had one of the Burgundy ones and I sold it. Man do I need another one for ny collection.
