I found this machine at the thrift store today for $3 and it runs great. I'm trying to figure how to take off the door for a bag, but I'll figure it out. Anyone got any info for this machine? This smells like a elevator when you turn it on?????

Hoover

Nice vac,great price.
After you turn the hose to unlatch then swing the metal catch down and door will open(but not come off).Should have a shake out bag inside.Even though there was a paper bag available very few used it as you had to get a funnel shaped adapter with rubber band.Door in back will unsnap and open for blower(a feature missing on most modern vacs).
Did you get attachments?Any button lock Hoover atts will work. Some similar models had wheel dolly and attachment holder at machine end of hose.
Happy Hoovering.

I found the same exact model

for 3.96 from Goodwill about 6 months ago. Came with only the hose. It, too, smells like a musty elevator when run.
I disassembled it all and washed everything but the motor. Bag did not have anything nasty in it.
All the clean stuff is in the house - no smell at all. But the motor stinks still when run. It has been on my messy workbench until I can figure out how to disassemble it so hopefully I can get the musty odor out. If not I may just use it as a garage vac since to do not have a shop vac and do not suck up wet stuff anyway. My dustbuster is sometimes lacking in power out there.

Here is a good thread on the Portapower series if you had not found it yet...

"Choppy motor"

Scott,

You might want to check your motors carbon pressure, worn brushes and also give the armature a little shine where the brushes ride against. That might help smooth things out a little. Also when the on/off switch begins to wear out it can cut out a bit. Try spraying a little contact cleaner on the switch, couldn't hurt.

Ben

You are correct. My friend Eric gave it to me. He bought it brand new. I have the box and everything. All vac shop repair rooms need a blower of some kind. I used to use an old Filter Queen but the motor finally gave way. The Hoover was perfect as it can actually sit on the workbench and is the right size and power for all those needs. After I wash a part, I use the Hoover to dry it.
