Hoover Model Numbers before the 'U' Models

Hi, can anyone elaborate why the Hoover Convertible for instance, has this series of "seemingly" haphazard model numbers that don't follow a sequence? And, what year did the 'u' series start was it 1973? Thanks, Ron

I too would think it was 1973.

But, to clarify your thoughts, I also think you would like to know if there were any model numbers without a "U" or an "S" (U=upright, S=suction) at the beginning?

Uh... to re-clarify my original POV, I meant to ask whether or not you want to know if there were any vacuums sold 1974 and later that had letterless model numbers???

I think you are correct.. to my knowledge, most cleaners after 1973 or so didn't have letterless model numbers. I don't remember what year the 918 went away, that might be an exception... It also may be around the same time when the Hoover Company opened their Industrial Park Plant - which primarily assembled canister vacs, did cord and leadwire processing, and other miscellaneous manufacturing. I don't recall exactly what year that opened.

Yes, the 918 was among the last of the pre-'73 models to be sold into 1974 and beyond... it was replaced by the U7037 around 1979... that was the last hurrah, as it would give way to the (USA-made) Conquest line in 1983.
