Hoover Model Numbers before the 'U' Models

Hi, can anyone elaborate why the Hoover Convertible for instance, has this series of "seemingly" haphazard model numbers that don't follow a sequence? And, what year did the 'u' series start was it 1973? Thanks, Ron

I think you are correct.. to my knowledge, most cleaners after 1973 or so didn't have letterless model numbers. I don't remember what year the 918 went away, that might be an exception... It also may be around the same time when the Hoover Company opened their Industrial Park Plant - which primarily assembled canister vacs, did cord and leadwire processing, and other miscellaneous manufacturing. I don't recall exactly what year that opened.
